As part of the planned project exhibition “Unframed/Reframed,” the show addresses themes such as identity, exclusion, and the boundaries between the mainstream and the non-mainstream. Through a variety of media such as installation, video, photography, and digital imaging technologies, cultural contexts are explored from different perspectives. Today’s technologies are shaped by invisible norms, prejudices, and cultural assumptions. The participating artists critically examine these structural forces of culture and technology from their individual perspectives and transform them into artistic forms of expression.

The exhibition brings together various forms of expression such as mixed media, video, photo installation, object and spatial installation, sculpture, and performance, creating a multi-layered yet harmonious overall effect.

“Unframed/Reframed” does not limit itself to pointing out problems, but aims to pose new questions to the audience and jointly open up possibilities for reflection, imagination, and practical action.

In autumn 2025, DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam is showing the exhibition Wohnkomplex. Art and Life in Prefabricated Housing. In this group exhibition, guest curator Kito Nedo explores the question of how East German prefabricated housing estates are negotiated in art.

The exhibition presents installations, paintings, drawings, photographs and films created since the 1970s. In the exhibition, Kito Nedo brings together works that view and categorise prefabricated housing differently - as a place to live, as a symbol of social utopias and as a projection screen for social change. The focus is not only on prefabricated housing as an architectural legacy, but also as a cultural resonance space that raises questions about belonging, community and memory. The exhibition dovetails artistic works with socio-political issues and reflects on how urban spaces affect lifestyles and social structures.

Wohnkomplex opens up new perspectives on a building and living model that continues to have an impact today. Originally, prefabricated housing was the centrepiece of GDR social policy, a place of socialisation and a symbol of real socialist progress - until 1990. After the end of the GDR, it became the scene of painful transformations and a symbol of social decline and racist violence. As modern ruins, the buildings awaited demolition, were renovated or remodelled. The prefabricated blocks never became a monument, but remained a living presence. It is a place of remembrance of the GDR where living continues.

The exhibition Global Fascisms is a critical examination of the aesthetic, social and political dynamics of fascism, focussing on its impact and ideological functioning. A key aim is to understand fascism not only as a historical phenomenon, but also as an ongoing global threat that goes beyond a historically limited definition and manifests itself today in different political, cultural and social contexts. The exhibition focuses on historical and contemporary contexts in which far-right ideologies thrive, scrutinising concepts such as 'identity', 'community' and 'belonging'.

The exhibition brings together works by around fifty international artists who address the rise of fascist thought in a variety of media, including painting, film, performance, discourse, publications and digital formats. Eli Cortiñas, Professor of Media Art at the HGB, is represented in the exhibition with the work 'Surrender, Dorothy! Historical artworks complement the group exhibition, revealing surprising continuities between past and present. The exhibition offers insights into the seductive affects and aesthetics of fascist ideologies and at the same time analyses the social and technological aspects inherent in these dynamics.
From the role of 'social media' in creating echo chambers that reinforce fascisation, to the invocation of nostalgic myths of 'golden ages' as a means of authoritarian rhetoric, the exhibitionrhetoric, the exhibition explores the mechanisms that sustain these ideologies and highlights the interplay between issues such as economic inequality, migration and the politicisation of religion in fuelling nationalist affects. Through the integration of art and rigorous interdisciplinary research, Global Fascisms promotes new ways of understanding and engaging with these pressing issues at a critical moment when constituencies worldwide are turning dramatically to right-wing, far-right and authoritarian movements. The exhibition positions art not only as a medium of reflection, but also as an active force that opposes authoritarian aesthetics and ideologies.

200 artists, including many who live and work in Saxony, studied or were born here, teach or exhibit here, are supporting an art raffle organised by the non-profit association Land in Sicht e.V. with donations of works. These will be exhibited in the visitor centre of Hall 14 during the autumn tour of the Spinnerei galleries and can be purchased by lot in cash or paypal. One ticket costs 200 euros. The aim of the campaign is to use the proceeds to support cultural and democracy initiatives in Saxony. The rule is: every ticket wins!

Due to the current budget situation in the Free State of Saxony, many democracy initiatives, art and cultural organisations and therefore also many social locations in rural areas are dependent on additional funding. Since 2019, the independent funding organisation Land in Sicht e.V. has been supporting non-profit associations in rural regions of Saxony that are committed to open-mindedness and humane, democratic and social ways of thinking through their cultural and social work. The aim is to provide quick and uncomplicated support for smaller, young, but also established cultural associations, which are also under increasing political pressure. To this end, the organisation collects donations and membership fees and awards funding for projects in Saxony in three rounds per year. In this way, over 75,000 euros were made available for 45 non-profit projects in 2024, for example.

Media Broadcast GmbH, owner of the historic large-scale radio station in Nauen, is inviting visitors to the radio station to mark Open Monument Day. On this occasion, the Brandenburg Museum is showing the artistic film "Telegraphy as a Genocidal Tool" (2025, 23 min.) by artist Tuli Mekondjo, which was created for the exhibition "Signals of Power. Nauen, Kamina, Windhoek" exhibition. The artist uses a ritual performance to link the major radio stations in Windhoek and Nauen in order to draw attention to colonial continuities between Namibia and Germany.

Prof Dr Dieter Daniels, co-curator of "Signals of Power", will accompany the screening on site and will be available for discussions with visitors. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience the film at an original historical location where the former technical innovation was linked to colonial power politics.

Angelika Waniek's new solo performance - at the end of a summer of machine conversations - is another magic trick. "Is this the end of the world as we know it?" A floating narrative about what is invisible.

And Waniek is not alone in the evenings. The centre of the stage in the spotlight offers space for another person: Leipzig author Lara Hampe with a reading of "Das Halstuch von Romy" in the opening programme.

At the end of the summer semester, the HGB presents the final projects of the master students from all disciplines from the winter and summer semesters 2024/25. They are the result of the two-year postgraduate programme at the HGB, which deepens and expands artistic-practical and artistic-scientific skills.
The approximately 20 artistic positions will be presented to the public as loosely connected solo exhibitions in the Techne Sphere Leipzig and in the Werkschauhalle at the Leipziger Spinnerei. As part of this workshop and its public activation, the university's atrium will become a space of sonic entanglements: a sonic body, a vibrating space, a collective instrument - an architecture for "Sonic Kinships". Resonating auditory awareness and reciprocal action, we transpose the location, participating artists and listeners into bodies that sound in themselves, performative entities and interwoven echoes.

Anna Schimkat is a sound and installation artist whose work deals with site-specificity, acoustic ecology and spatial listening. Known for public sound interventions in Leipzig and beyond, she explores sound art through installations and performances. Using self-built instruments and field recordings, she creates spaces that sharpen perception and invite interaction.

Organised as part of (Un)Learning Digitalities - Programme on the Practice and Theory of the Digital with Max Schneider, Artistic Associate for Audio and Eliza Goldox, Office for Digital Teaching.

The project is co-funded by the European Union and co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.

Malte Uchtmann from the class for photography and media and the class expanded cinema is part of the award-winning exhibition of the Wüstenrot Documentary Photography Award 15. In his award-winning video and sound installation ANT*HOLOGY: De/Bugging the cultural history of ants, Malte Uchtmann uses the representation of ants to explore how our perception is influenced by our social embedding and the possibilities of acquiring knowledge. The cultural history of ants becomes the starting point for an examination of human social forms.

The exhibition shows new works by young artists that were created as part of the 15th round of awards. The Wüstenrot Foundation's Documentary Photography Prizes are the most important awards of their kind in Germany. Together with the Photographic Collection of the Museum Folkwang, they have been awarded every two years since 1994 to young artists from German universities and academies who use contemporary documentary image strategies and forms of representation to question the present. The works are shown in a travelling exhibition. A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition. A selection of the works will be included in the Museum Folkwang's photographic collection, where they will be available for research and future exhibition projects.

The exhibition "GEFLECHT" by the Kunstverein Zentrale für Kunst e. V. brings together 34 German and international artistic positions from 10 October to 26 October 2025 in WERKSCHAU Hall 12 on the grounds of the Leipzig cotton mill.

The vernissage will be celebrated on 10 October from 6 p.m. with an opening speech and music programme.

Braids are created in nature, in our thoughts, in our hands. They carry memories, traditions, identities - and thus also us humans. They form a web of ideas and stories. Held by tension, carried by patterns... Nothing stands alone. Everything intertwines.

In the group show, visitors are invited to see and scrutinise the diverse connections between our everyday lives and our environment in a new way. What at first glance may seem confusing or incidental - relationships, traditions, networks, structures, patterns - can be experienced and understood in the exhibition space. At a time when social cohesion, ecological dependencies and political and ethical structures are increasingly coming under pressure, "GEFLECHT" offers a space for reflection:

Which connections carry us? Which ones restrict us? And how can new connections be conceived?

A cooperation of the HGB Gallery, the Class for Performative Arts of the HGB and the 12th Festival Politics in Independent Theatre

The "Graniczanka", the border dwellers, live in front of, behind and between the politically defined borders. Their everyday lives unfold between two countries and, in the border triangle between Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, even three. They know the world of currency differences, different languages and radio ranges. Although they share a common sky, they have different memories of a common history. They can choose where they buy the freshest vegetables, which dentist or manicurist they go to or how their child benefit flows faster.

The "Graniczanka" installation invites you to participate in the knowledge of the border residents. It raises questions such as: In what way does everyday practice undermine political reality? Where does the political appear in the everyday? Does the Polish West also need mobile counselling centres against right-wing extremism? What longings commute daily over bridges, through forests and past petrol stations?

In the context of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, students and graduates of the HGB Leipzig in cooperation with Chemnitz University of Technology (TU) are showing the exhibition "unvereint / vereint" at three locations: in the university library, at the bus station and in Chemnitz Open Space. The artistic works refer to themes of the Capital of Culture and its motto "C the Unseen": the transformations since 1989, their consequences for today's debates on social cohesion and political radicalisation, on "we-identities" and their tendencies towards dissolution as well as the importance of civil society engagement for the defence of the values achieved in 1989.

The project is a continuation of the examination of the topics that began at the Leipzig 2024 Festival of Lights in memory of the Peaceful Revolution. Some new, site-specific works will be created for Chemnitz, while others will be adapted to the specific context and expand their references to the topics dealt with on site. Students from the fields of book art/graphic design, photography, painting/graphics and media art are involved in the project led by Sven Bergelt, Juliane Jaschnow and Dieter Daniels.

A supporting programme with lectures, talks and a film programme is being developed together with Chemnitz University of Technology and promotes dialogue between artists, researchers and the Chemnitz public.

One of my favourite books begins with the introduction of an old monk who, at the end of his life, takes it upon himself to write down the "memorable and horrific events" that he experienced as a novice in an abbey in northern Italy. Everyone knows this story; it doesn't end well for anyone. But before that happens, the chronicler tells of an immensely large library and, again and again, of wondrous books and the pictures they contain, "with colours (as) beautiful as painting".

700 years later: In the stacks of the HGB library, I select books whose covers or titles arouse my curiosity and flick through the pages. I see printed Sütterlin script. Strange game instructions. Old-fashioned adverts. And again and again strange pictures: An armour helmet from the 16th century with a human face carved into it to deter enemies. A pair of 19th century toy dolls baked from bread dough (!). The pitiful view of men's clothing from the 17th century that looks as if the wearer is still wearing it. I proceed according to the pure pleasure principle. Only gradually do I realise that I am looking for and finding precisely those pictures whose execution or meaning seem "memorable and horrific" to me at the same time.

For the "Hidden Treasures" exhibition series, publications from the HGB library 's otherwise inaccessible stacks are presented. Often, only a subtly placed colour-coded bookmark or a coloured underlay indicates that it is an exhibition exhibit.

The exhibition "Notes on Lightness" examines the concept of lightness beyond the usual clichés. It does not merely thematise it as something weightless, floating or as a fetish of happiness that seems to promise a break from the omnipresent burdens. Rather, she understands becoming light as a resistant movement against a present that is not recognised as a political space of possibility and action in the repetition of the same old thing. Lightness therefore comes into focus in times of upheaval, when stable structures and orders are eroding. Or when power regimes channel or break the desire for difference and change.

"Notes on Lightness" opens up a sketch-like space in which strategies of lightness are visualised as diverse "movement (inventions)" - comparable to a dancing body "that slips away from itself". On display are artistic works that utilise lightness as a transformative potential: These include improvised dance, the queering of body politics, the fabulous refusal to simply confirm world relations and the "relational modes" of micro-revolutionary moments of solidarity. A central concern here is to counter the paradoxical appropriation of lightness by power structures such as financial capitalism, the economisation of nature or the digitality paradigm with another form of movement (discovery).
