Three photographers explore different facets of the Ruhr area as part of the "emscherbilder" project. The photographic positions of the 2023 vintage will be exhibited from 1 to 26 October 2024 in the Notkirche art space in Essen. Since 2015, the Emschergenossenschaft has regularly invited photographers to take an artistic and documentary look at the Emscher conversion and the development of the Emscher Valley as part of the "emscherbilder" project. Contrary to what the title might suggest, the river is only rarely visible. This is because the focus is not on the Emscher itself, but on the landscape, cultural, social and economic changes in the Emscher region. The "emscherbilder" format is intended to accompany the effects of the Emscher conversion on the landscape and society with the help of targeted commissioned photography and capture them for future generations. The commissioned photographers are invited to explore and document the transformation of the region in specially developed concepts and their realisation. The photo collection created in this context is intended to supplement the archive of the ongoing photographic documentation of the Emscher conversion by the association itself. As these are mainly limited to technical aspects and the documentation of construction sites, the "emscherbilder" project can complement this perspective by broadening the focus to include region-specific topics related to the Emscher conversion. Between 2015 and 2022, sixteen documentary or journalistic-style photographs have already been taken that describe the Emscher region and social life from individual perspectives and through very different themes.

In 2023, three photographers were selected to realise their concepts. The works now on display each have their own focus on the Emscher region and the people who live there, thus drawing attention to important issues. The photographs are part of the Ruhr Museum's photography collection.

Philosophy often demands answers to fundamental questions. "Alienation" is seen as a signal word for a social situation that has become structurally difficult, in which a 'right life in the wrong' has become impossible.

We would like to know where we stand and where our discomfort comes from. At the same time, our confidence in receiving convincing answers is dwindling. There is talk of a fragmented public sphere, which in turn produces phenomena of indifference and isolation.

This shows that alienation is not something that can be overcome once and for all. What is less clear, however, is what constitutes the experience of alienation - and how to deal with it. What should be accepted, what should be problematized or changed? "In a strange way, the stranger is in ourselves." (Julia Kristeva) It is disconcerting because it eludes us and makes us feel incapable. It contains an irritation that is capable of interrupting its own dynamics. What else can be said about it?

We warmly invite you to the first part of our exhibition series on work / labor at PLAST. The group show ‘277 Days’ will bring together various positions that reflect the modern understanding of labour through different emphases. What social conditions and developments could mean for the understanding of one’s own artistic practice - the work as an artist - will be the subject of the exhibition catalogue, which this time is digitally conceived as a video work that will be shown at the closing night.

The Presskuchen tour offers artists the opportunity to develop structures and networks across various cities. It uses the gesture of staging and the structure of the stage itself, highlighting and doubling the staged nature of exhibiting. Proceeding from the idea of bringing individual positions together that have been developed over the years, without having to subordinate them to a specific theme. The tour travels through the cities of Leipzig, Berlin, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Graz, and Vienna. - -> - - -> -->

Born out of a shared frustration with the purpose-oriented art scene and the desire for added value within the art business, they concentrate on finding and developing formats for young artists that circumvent these tendencies. Understanding and describing the conventions of artistic production and it’s representation in conventional exhibition spaces is part of the motivation, the Presskuchen tour.

As part of the Leipzig 2024 Light Festival to commemorate the Peaceful Revolution, students of the HGB Leipzig are presenting artistic works at two locations.

Under the title "Unvereint/Vereint", the projection on Augustusplatz highlights the historical complexity of the square and questions the public visibility of these layers today. The students scrutinise clichés and differences between East and West and examine how it is possible to unite and stand up for common values even when united.

In their work at the Round Corner, the students critically examine the memory of a sense of unity from 1989, the question of the visibility of marginalised groups and the struggle for power and control.

The photographers Ursula Arnold, Sibylle Bergemann and Evelyn Richter were contemporary witnesses of upheavals that are still epoch-defining caesuras today: the construction of the Wall in 1961, the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 and the fall of the Wall (1989). In their photographs, they captured these events, but above all everyday life in the GDR: critically, realistically, but always with an empathetic and special eye for the people who lived in this country. In their art, they have dealt with the social conditions in a stubborn and independent way, and their photographs - of self-confident and self-determined women, among others - are still icons today.

What meanings do their photographic works have for us today? How do we interpret and read the works against the backdrop of current upheavals? How does the next generation of (female) photographers deal with aspects of being a woman, feminism and self-determination and with memories of the past that reach into the present? These are the questions we will be addressing this evening.

In the cherished tradition of "Generation Talks on East Germany", selected works and texts from the estates of Ursula Arnold, Sibylle Bergemann and Evelyn Richter will be presented in a reflective manner by their granddaughters and nieces. The Leipzig-based photographer Cihan Çakmak puts her work into a lively dialogue with the works. The clarinettist Constance Morvan creates exciting spaces and sounds in her music.

Although the vulva as an external part of the female* sex has become increasingly present and visible on a motivational and linguistic level in recent years, it is still barely present in public perception or in art. The exhibition therefore brings together contemporary artists who have dedicated themselves to the positive re-appropriation and visualization of the vulva with themes such as empowerment, sexuality, cultural history and menstruation. The aim is not only to reduce shame and taboos, but also to create empowering moments.

Kerstin Drechsel returns to the Konsumverein after ten years. In her works, the artist explores cultural, gender-specific and queer themes that raise questions about identity and intimacy in the context of social norms.

E-Werk (2016-2024) is painting, sculpture, design, installation and BJD trash. "Mobile batteries or transformers of a different kind are created, charged with queerness and feminist verve. You can discover club-wielding Neanderthal women, megaphones like breasts (or vice versa), the remains of an organ-shaped mother temple, but also pretty blue and white patterns that are superficially reminiscent of old English porcelain painting. Some of them become ornaments and cover the inside and outside surfaces of the boxes and crates like wallpaper. Lids and doors can be opened to reveal tableaux, model-like interiors that could serve as strange doll's houses. Everything is hybrid. A picture is a piece of furniture is a room..." Here you can take a break and ask yourself what exists from place to place. Ambiguous boundaries become blurred as we draw the ceilings and take a break in the creative process.

Selma Kan's "dazwischen zwischenraum" also treats the pause spatially less as an interruption and more as a state. Toni Braun's installation "The Joint Scraper" is cage-like, but not without escape routes. Franziska Dathes  Advertising display "I'm melting away / on this sunny day" makes a promise, that we cannot keep. SON's "Floating resemblance" invites and rejects. Chiara Hofmann presents her painting as a method of conservation, referring to the room's former role as a cold chamber. Felix Lorenz creates a black wall based on
a black wall painting based on one of his linocuts. Klara Schöll shows a book full of prints that trace the period between farewell and return. Liza Pushkina's installation barely noticeably traces time with patterns that can only be deciphered in this place. In Shahd Skaf's work, the forced pause is embedded in spatial narrowness and temporal expanse, a state of transition and repetition, mediated by physicality and intimacy.

Dr. Regine Ehleiter, Berlin art historian and curator, working for the Institute for Theory in 2021/22, deals intensively with the topic of "Artists Books" and, during a visit to the library, talks about a project by the long-time director of the MoMA Library and artist book historian Clive Phillpot in the 1970s: conceptual ("difficult") publications (which could neither be clearly defined as books nor as exhibition catalogs) are listed as works of art in their own right and are not relegated to the stacks, but presented in the open stacks: His aim was to create surprises and moments of wonder in the confrontation with the "odd pamphlets": "People using any part of the library could then become mystified or be given surprises by coming across puzzling artists' books that have been dispersed or sercreted through the collection... wonderful moments of not understanding".

Bettina Wija-Stein, head of the bookbinding workshop, will be responsible for the second selection of special titles, which are actually "hidden" in the magazine, but will be shown to the public on the occasion of the anniversary (if the condition of the collection permits):

"Treasures in the library, not secret and hidden, but accessible at all times! What endless possibilities our university offers! The artists' books in my memory miss the etchings, but they were there too. Nevertheless, the small selection is hopefully sufficient to arouse curiosity, as a stimulus and reference to history.  For example: Goethe, Three Fairy Tales was a contribution to the IBA (International Book Art Exhibition) in 1982. Teachers worked with the utmost professionalism to raise the HGB's international profile. Diplomas, often with hand typesetting and woodcuts, were technically and artistically supervised at the highest level in the workshops. Books can give pleasure, provide peace and serenity, transport us to foreign or new (pictorial) worlds, impart knowledge and/or allow us to think outside the box. Let's do it."

Artistic freedom is a fundamental right guaranteed by law. And for good reason, as it guarantees the freedom of artistic expression far removed from ideology and censorship. It is not uncommon for artistic means to open up perspectives that allow a new look at everyday problems that may already be entrenched.

Not infrequently, boundaries are crossed - sometimes as a provocation, sometimes consciously, sometimes thoughtlessly, sometimes with a wink, sometimes without.

But where does the "fun" end? How far can satire go? Is it still covered by artistic freedom when other groups of people are defamed, insulted or stereotyped? How justified is cancel culture? Do we already have more censorship than we would like? And is "art" really so free or doesn't it always have a mission?

Is it allowed to - how would you decide? On this evening, the audience will take a stand in the truest sense of the word: take a stand on individual cases in which artistic freedom is possibly being exceeded or should bow to other freedoms, and discuss with us! In five minutes, two experts will present their point of view on an example case. The participants then sit behind the person whose opinion they represent and take part in the ensuing discussion. Anyone who changes their mind in the course of the discussion will be asked to change their position.

It's not about winning or losing, but about getting to know different lines of argument and their backgrounds, listening, arguing constructively and rethinking. We look forward to lively discussions together!

... "Processing Fibres" uses performative processes to explore the relationship to oneself and to others, mediated by the body and the layers that surround it: Clothing, fabric, fashion, material in and on the body.

What we wear and how we wear it is never neutral, never without meaning. Normative codes, social hierarchies, gender and cultural imprints, personal experiences, injuries and preferences - everything flows into the choice of textile coverings and the act of dressing and undressing. Through the performative use of textiles and other media, the exhibition evolves and changes over the course of the two days - Processing Fibres.

17:30 Introduction by the artists

RE-presentation of interactive student works from the "100xMB" seminar class on the artist's question "What to do to make love? "

"Moi Aussi, je me suis demandé si je ne pouvais pas vendre quelque chose et réussir dans la vie. Cela fait un moment déjà que je ne suis bon à rien. Je suis âgé de quarante ans ... [...]"

This is what the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) wrote in 1964 in the invitation to his first solo exhibition: "I, too, asked myself whether I could not sell something and be successful in life. I hadn't been good for anything for some time. I am forty years old ... [...]". He showed objects in the exhibition. These included fifty unsold copies of his last book of poetry, Pense-Bête (1964), which were transformed into a plaster object.

In 2024, Pense-Bête will be 60 years old, Broodthaers 100 years old and the HGB library 150 years old. An opportunity to celebrate together: a deceased artist who made and buried books, with the library of the Academy of Visual Arts!

The students of the seminar "100xMB or 'What to do to make love?", supervised by Michal B. Ron, are "also" asking themselves whether they can show "something" new about Broodthaers and "succeed" in the seminar. Does showing Marcel Broodthaers mean de-plastering or over-plastering books? In the field of tension between IMITATION COPY COPY ORIGINAL | IMITATION FALSE COPY ORIGINAL, the students will present their further results in a second part on 24 October 2024.

15:00: Explanations by the artist

In 2016, Ingrid Wagner, sister of the internationally renowned curator Frank Wagner, donated the extensive library of her brother, who died at an early age, to the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst. The collection represents an important thematic concentrate of European and American art history, including catalogues from the early days of internationally renowned artists whose exhibition activities Wagner accompanied for decades - some with personal dedications. After being catalogued and indexed, the approximately 4,500 books will be stamped with an ex-libris stamp designed by Christin Lahr and incorporated into the library collection. The curatorial estate with artworks and documents was given to the recently opened Archiv der Avantgarden (ADA) in Dresden.

Frank Wagner, who most recently curated the German pavilion of the photography exhibition in Dubai and the European Month of Photography, made a name for himself for decades with internationally recognised exhibitions. He supported young artists and often brought them to Berlin before their international breakthrough. With sensitive radicalism, he pursued political issues relating to social conditions, everyday violence, racism, colonialism, fascism and marginalised sexuality. His experimental curatorial approach provoked uncomfortable discourses and also addressed people beyond the art world. Wagner played a pioneering role with early exhibitions on power-political body discourses, gender issues and AIDS. In 1988, he curated Europe's first exhibition on HIV and gave a new dimension to the politicisation of the private sphere.

Frank Wagner has been closely associated with the HGB since 2001 and was regularly invited to give lectures, workshops and talks. In 2007, he curated the 2nd Faculty Show "Der Wal oder Artisten in der Zirkuskuppel" with teaching staff, and in 2015 the exhibition "Begehren" with the Bara class.

The presentation introduces the work of the internationally renowned curator and offers the opportunity to familiarise oneself with his books.

The 3DXR (3D and Extended Reality) area of the Audiovisual Workshop presents contemporary VR/computer games and graphic applications to try out and experience. In this kick-off event for the use of our new workshop space (room 2.25), we offer insights into immersive and aesthetically impressive computer game worlds, current and trend-setting games, as well as the technologies used in 3D computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality.

The applications on display will be made permanently available to members of the university in cooperation with the HGB library.

15:30: Explanations by the artist

Since 31 May 2009, Christin Lahr has been transferring 1 cent a day to the Federal Ministry of Finance and counteracting the growing mountain of debt in homeopathic doses. MONEY ALWAYS FINDS A WAY WITHOUT RESISTANCE. She writes 140 characters from "DAS KAPITAL", vol. 1, by Karl Marx in the "Intended use" field. Over 43 years, the entire text is transferred to the state's central account via online banking and booked there as economic capital growth. The increase in value through interest and compound interest, the invested labour, lifetime or cultural and symbolic value creation are not yet taken into account.

THE CAPITAL, which is irrevocably inscribed in accounts and archives, is a DONATION to the people as a whole, entered in the state budget of the Federal Republic of Germany, administered by the elected representatives, safely stored at the Bundesbank. Each of the approximately 15,709 transfers is printed out once, signed and, in the course of the project, given as a gift to citizens who, as shareholders, form a global network. Re*mapping Leipzig is an APP that artistically conveys the history and present of Leipzig's women's movements and makes both forgotten stories and current conflicts visible in the city.

The APP with an integrated city map allows users to experience artistic interventions at the sites of the Leipzig women's movement, which play a key role in the city's feminist history narrative. Several alumni and teachers of the HGB Leipzig are and were involved in the creation of the app and the contributions.

The Re*mapping pop-up structure is complemented by a media selection curated by the library.

The exhibition is the result of intensive artistic research by Heidi Specker, Professor of Photography at the HGB, who studied the biography and work of Gera avant-garde photographer Aenne Biermann (1898-1933) as part of a Hertie working scholarship at the Häselburg Gera 2023. Specker not only examines Biermann's photographic work, but also the fate of her 4,000 negatives confiscated by the Nazis in 1940. Only around 300 original prints, which Biermann had developed herself, are preserved today in international museums. Based on this loss, Specker approaches Aenne Biermann's work with great sensitivity. Specker sees her artistic exploration of Biermann as work on memory: she not only visited various archives where Biermann's remaining photographs are kept, but also went in search of traces in her home town of Gera. The city of Gera is thus embedded in a discourse of remembrance, with questions such as "What should be remembered and what must not be forgotten?" establishing a link to the current political reality in the new federal states. Specker, who lives in Berlin and Leipzig, explores these questions and juxtaposes her photographs with those of Biermann.

In the digital art space,Hesse & Wakil offer an insight into their artistic and research work process, which deals with the Munich work "Lehmzunge" as well as with topologies of labour, extraction and production. The exhibition in the digital art space presents itself as an open studio that illuminates the research and design process for an (anti-)monument on various aspects of the work. An associative archive will be developed that combines historical material, artistic models and speculative designs.

The digital art space serves as a workshop in which they reweave this archive with the help of current technologies. Their work is based on research in historical photo archives and the Munich city archives on the history of clay mining between Ismaning and Ramersdorf, which took place from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Hesse & Wakil address the visibility and invisibility of labour in an exemplary way by combining historical archive material with modern tools such as generative AI for image generation, 3D-printed objects and augmented reality.

The artists draw on methods from hack and makerspaces as well as commoning contexts to link industrial production processes, craft traditions and visions of the future of labour and automation. This creates an interdisciplinary space in which different strands of the past, present and future of labour are explored and made visible.

The studio can be viewed from outside around the clock and is enhanced by an augmented reality application that can be accessed via a QR code.

The Open Studio in the digital art space will be accompanied by a curated film programme in the DG Kunstraum. This will show an associative selection of film works by Mareike Bernien & Alex Gerbaulet and Minhye Chu that address local raw material extraction and the dynamics of extractivism. The programme sheds light on the complex interdependencies of mechanisation, automation and human labour within socio-economic structures - topics that are also important in the context of current debates on de-globalisation in a post-colonial context.

"ROASTED PIGEONS or ART LEFT WORK" is a collaborative exhibition project on the relationship between art and criticism. Does theory need art to deal with unresolved historical problems? Does art need a corresponding critique in order to unfold its potential? Seven authors were invited to write about a series of selected works of art. The exhibition presents both the previously unpublished critiques and the corresponding artistic works. "ROASTED PIGEONS or ART LEFT WORK" explores the question of whether and to what extent the reciprocal relationship between art and criticism is still relevant. The exhibition follows on from "The Good Shovel" (2022) and "I say a Flower" (2023) and, like these, sees itself as an attempt at self-criticism of contemporary art. It pursues the fundamental questioning of the common sense prevailing in the contemporary art scene, as well as its dominant phenomena.

Together with Joachim Blank and Karl Heinz Jeron (Blank & Jeron ), the Centre for Net Art has undertaken an extensive reconstruction project this year. The canonical work without addresses by the Berlin artist duo was developed and produced for documenta X in 1997. For several months, users were able to generate new content, similar to what we know today from generative AI. After 100 days of documenta - the end of the exhibition - the work was removed from the Internet and has not been available since.

The Centre for Net Art and the artists cordially invite you to the presentation of the results and to view the simulation of the work without addresses, which is back online after almost 30 years. In a group tour, the reconstruction team and the artists will present the various aspects of the work and the reconstruction project.

The reconstruction team has collected extensive documentation of the work and its development and compiled it in a wiki.

The resulting Netart Repository will enable a detailed examination of the work as well as further conservation efforts in the future. At the same time, a simulation of without addresses was realised in cooperation with the artists, which makes it possible to view the work in a contemporary browser. By focussing on the mediation of the work, visitors can experience the original "feel" of the work to better understand the functionality and conceptual framework of the original documenta version.

Ritual Association and Talk with Anna Zett and Guests

As part of her research residency, Anna Zett has been working with archive materials of the galerie weisser elefant since September. The artist is focusing on the last years of the GDR, when the gallery was an important place for performance, installation and artistic experimentation. With reference to the municipal gallery’s institutional restart under the name Kunst Raum Mitte, Zett raises the question of transgenerational handover of experience: “Where to put it, where does it come from? In the middle, no origin in sight. Beginning – middle – end – beginning. What happened? The ritual doesn’t repeat itself. Bye bye is gathering in the present.”

At the end of her research, Anna Zett invites a few actors of the years 1987–1990 onto the playing field of Resonanz – Post-Socialist Group Improvisation – a participatory format she developed in 2020/21 in collaboration with the performer and choreographer Hermann Heisig and a group of co-reseachers, among them Ute Waldhausen. For this occasion the game will change its rules. Ritual associations that have emerged in Anna Zett’s research will be performed, experienced and discussed by herself and her guests. Everyone present is invited to participate physically, as well as to make use of the conversational playing positions.

How can an institution address its history and what methods can be used to approach, explore and expand upon alternative narratives? Students in the Class for Performative Arts of Isabel Lewis and Lissy Willberg at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig have been exploring these questions since the beginning of the 2024 summer semester.

As part of their research process, the students presented ELEFANT in June 2024 at the experimental residency institution Callie’s in Berlin-Wedding. As a form of open rehearsal and performative investigation, ELEFANT opened a window onto the ongoing research process. How can artistic research consciously focus on affects, and what could this achieve? How can historical references, fragmentary stories, and ephemera be handled with both care and playfulness? What resonances do students find with the Permanente Kunstkonferenz (Permanent Art Conference), a performance festival held at galerie weisser elefant in 1989?

On October 27, the students will continue to pursue these shared and tested methodologies and present their research at Kunst Raum Mitte.

Are archives spaces of affect? What can research look like that questions its own standards - and instead turns everything that defies standards of documentation and classification into a method? In an exchange with Agnieszka Roguski and Natalie Keppler (Artistic Directors Kunst Raum Mitte), the artists Isabel Lewis and Yon Natalie Mik talk about performance art in relation to archival processes–and discuss the impossibility of archiving performance on the one hand, and the possibilities of dealing with it artistically on the other. They will discuss the relationship between affects, feelings, subjective experiences and supposedly objective forms of historiography, as well as the moments of protest that accompany them.

In the novel "Drift", the author attempts to write a novel with the title "Drifts". In the process, she constantly distracts herself and the whole thing threatens to fail. In this failure, however, she reveals the materials and tools of her writing, making the boundary between novel and essay permeable. Or is there a boundary at all? The text, excerpted in Edit 92/93, was written by Kate Zambreno - long a star of American experimental literature, but still unknown in this country. Based on the reading, Insa Wilke, Maryam Aras and the editors of Edit will talk about the possibilities of the literary essay and failure in writing.

With “Library en core”, Heidi Specker's showcase exhibition focuses on the library as a cultural space for negotiation. Feuilleton and social media are currently referring to this context again with the fashion trend “librariancore”.

The starting point is the b/w photograph “Untitled Filmstill #13” by Cindy Sherman. The cliché of the librarian reaching into the bookshelf and quoting outdated fashionable drawers is something Sherman was already questioning in her iconic and critical way in 1978 in her assignment of female roles. The term “core”, which describes current fashion trends, is taken up by Specker and clearly identified as an outdated repetition of the “well-read lady” by modifying it to “en core”. The “librariancore” propagates a fashion trend that adds contemporary accessories to what librarians wear according to the clichéd image in films and books. However, with items such as narrow reading glasses, gray tights and pencil skirts, the trend remains stuck in the cliché and continues to confirm it. The title “Library en core” makes it clear - this is too much for Heidi Specker.

In the exhibition, Specker joins Sherman, makes use of current Sherman merchandising from the art world and says: “Id rather be swimming!”

This multi-sensory and participatory screening program is presented by artist Anna Zett, who has joined HGB as artistic faculty in the Klasse für Performative Künste (Prof. Isabel Lewis) this October.
Instead of her more widely screened research-based films which usually are created in an extensive production & montage process, Anna Zett will use this occasion to show three shorter videos and video installation pieces, that were each recorded in a one-off physical improvisation. These works all address the power of symbolic language as something that is rooted in embodied life, and they search for new environments for playful connection at odds with the rule of value or ideology. Each video is introduced by an embodied group practice that affects the way one perceives the following work.

Since 2010, the Peaceful Revolution Foundation has awarded the Leipzig Ring Prize as part of the Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film. The prize is awarded to an artistic documentary film that demonstrates exemplary civic commitment to democracy and human rights or was made with great personal commitment and courage on the part of the filmmaker in the face of resistance and restrictions on freedom of the press and freedom of expression. This year, eight outstanding films have been nominated for the Leipzig Ring, from which a three-member jury will select the film to be honoured. The award includes the presentation of the statuette and prize money totalling €2,500.

Game session with the artist Ehab Assadi. The audience will have the opportunity to discover two games developed by the artist: 'Don't get attached', a board game inspired by PauloFreire's 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed', and 'Becoming', based on the book 'Man'sSearch for Meaning' by Viktor Frankl. Through luck and the roll of the dice, the players progress in life, are confronted with changing circumstances and reflect on the need to adapt. The event focuses on storytelling, collaboration and self-discovery through playful experimentation.

Ehab Assadi (b. 1995, Syria) is an artist and system design student at HGB Leipzig whose practice is based on collaboration and the unfolding of multiple narratives, with a particular focus on playful strategies. Growing up in a creative environment free from institutional constraints and surrounded by his grandfather's paintings and his father's photography, Ehab developed a distinct perspective on visual communication. His interest in conceptual graphic design grew as a means of introspection that helped him overcome the challenges of forced separation from his cultural roots. This experience led to a deeper exploration of art as a means for personal growth and expression. Assadi's approach to graphic design has many facets: sometimes it is satirical and offers sharp criticism of social issues, while in other cases it is characterised by responsibility, especially with regard to the difficulties people face in their daily lives.

As part of the exhibition intervention "Under One Sky - Of Patterns and Other Beings", which, based on the Damascus Room, deals with implicit patterns and their use, a workshop with Qusay Awad on the topic of community building will take place on 3 November 2024. The permanent exhibition in the Japanese Palace "Dialogue among Guests" is to be expanded to include this community-building element, which is intended to bring like-minded people together in order to experience a sense of community. At the centre of this workshop is an exchange of ideas about the challenges of geographical and cultural displacement and how these divides can be overcome. The artist shares stories and lessons from his personal biography, as well as his experiences as part of and working with collectives. The filmmaker and artist Rand Abou Fakher is invited as a guest of the workshop and will show her short film "So We Live".

Qusay Awad
(born 1995, As-Suwayda, Syria) is a Berlin-based architect and multidisciplinary artist. Through installations, sculptures, sound, moving images and performances, Awad's visionary work explores and connects ideas of historical rupture, memory, displacement and community. By exploring the material, sonic and social architectures that surround us, Awad creates multi-sensory experiences that provide both artistic and social space for connection, reflection and calm.

Rand Abou Fakher
is a filmmaker and artist with a background in classical music. In 2018, she wrote and directed the short film Braided Love, which premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Her next short film, So We Live, premiered at Berlinale Shorts 2020, was selected at various international festivals and won Oscar-qualifying awards. She has been a jury member at film festivals, a mentor at film workshops and a guest speaker at prestigious events such as the Marché du Film in Cannes and the Doha Film Institute's Short Script Lab. Since 2021, she has been working as a programmer for the Toronto Arab Film Festival while completing a two-year artist residency at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels, where she expanded her multimedia practice through her ongoing research "The Act of Witnessing: Challenging Hierarchies in Crafting the Moving Image". Her feature film debut, On The Way to Forgive I Forgot Myself, is supported by the Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds (VAF) and she is currently participating in the Torino Script Lab.

The Presskuchen tour offers artists the opportunity to develop structures and networks across various cities. It uses the gesture of staging and the structure of the stage itself, highlighting and doubling the staged nature of exhibiting. Proceeding from the idea of bringing individual positions together that have been developed over the years, without having to subordinate them to a specific theme. The tour travels through the cities of Leipzig, Berlin, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Munich, Graz, and Vienna. - -> - - -> -->

Born out of a shared frustration with the purpose-oriented art scene and the desire for added value within the art business, they concentrate on finding and developing formats for young artists that circumvent these tendencies. Understanding and describing the conventions of artistic production and it’s representation in conventional exhibition spaces is part of the motivation, the Presskuchen tour.

The symposium Perform: the common body takes this quote as an opportunity to allow community-building practices from performance art and neighbouring disciplines to become the subject of contemplation and a call to action.

The origins of performance art go back to the endeavours of the 1960s to create a new art form that emancipates itself from male-dominated art production. It therefore has an inherent activist character. But what other activist potentials arise from the collective practices of performance art? What performative gestures can create communities? Who is part and not part of this community?

The symposium aims to scientifically examine community-building practices from various disciplinary, decolonial and planetary perspectives and to make them practically tangible. Perform: the common body is intended to create a place to come together in order to develop shared visions that utilise artistic strategies. Over two days, the symposium will bring together actors from academia and artistic practice to speculate about (us as) a community and the activist force behind it.

In the work "ANKOMMEN", Malte Uchtmann deals with the architectural infrastructure provided by the state for the accommodation of refugees in Germany and thereby creates an examination of the effect that the prevailing construction methods and urban planning measures in this area can have on refugees and locals, as well as the social and political structures embedded in them.

The opening will be accompanied by live music by Liv Alma from 20:00.

Who or what speaks when art is spoken with/through/about? What (aesthetically coded) languages does art speak beyond academic conventions? Is this speaking merely a translation exercise that follows an enigmatic script, stuttering, mumbling, pausing or falling silent here and there? From where is it spoken and what exactly does such a conversation "with" art produce? Something that is fleeting and fluid, radically uneconomical or subjective, something that continues in silence, at the kitchen table or in sleep and is itself art again? The exhibition, seminar and dialogue format Score, Sketch, Script? The infinite art conversation explores these questions by presenting artistic works that utilise "talking about/with" as a method or artistic process. Of particular interest is the reciprocal relationship between art and conversation, seeing and speaking, which can enable/create a space of "co-creation" in a perhaps precarious way.

Our series aims to examine the political and physical economies of the disgusting East, according to the motto formulated by the playwright Heiner Müller: "My disgust is a privilege" (1979). We invite experts to the events and bring them into dialogue with each other in panel discussions. For each of the events, we will curate an artistic supporting programme including the premiere of a performance.

Event 1: Disgust as political horror in the 90s.
In the upheaval of the 90s, new nationalism and globalisation were connoted with euphoric feelings about the body: The frenzy of political change and intoxication in turbo-capitalism. These feelings were accompanied by disgust as a dark counterpart: disgust at the new others, disgust at the "standardised rubbish". In the first event of our series, we explore this abject abyss of the 90s and talk about the ejections of a reunified society.

As part of a Hertie working scholarship at the Häselburg Gera 2023, Heidi Specker has been researching the biography and work of Gera avant-garde photographer Aenne Biermann (1898-1933). She not only examines Biermann's photographic work, but also the fate of her 4000 negatives, which were confiscated by the Nazis in 1940. Only around 300 original prints, which Biermann had developed himself, are preserved today in international museums. Based on this loss, Specker approaches Aenne Biermann's work with great sensitivity. The lecture will place the work of Specker and Biermann theoretically in the context of the exhibition.
