In the series Ode to Eris, commissioned by the MdbK, Roxana Rios (*1994 Hanover) explores selected works from the permanent exhibition in the form of photographic-performative reinterpretations. Rios' artistic practice is characterised by a critical examination of historically evolved narratives and, in particular, the connections between image and knowledge production - in other words, ultimately the question of how certain image patterns in portraiture, such as gender stereotypes, have been perpetuated and consolidated to this day. Roxana Rios sees the body as a "construct, material and representative within social orders".

Roxana Rios studied photography under Heidi Specker at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (HGB) and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg under Juergen Teller and Katja Eydel. She went on to study Performative Arts with Isabel Lewis at the HGB. Roxana Rios lives and works in Leipzig.
The work group Ode to Eris is presented in the form of three large-format banners on the façade of the MdbK as well as several photographic interventions in the permanent exhibition. On the occasion of the project, a signed and numbered edition with all motifs of the series in the format 40 × 30 cm will be published in a limited edition (+ 1 artist proof) in a handmade cassette. The edition is available at the MdbK.

On Wednesday, 1 April at 4 pm there will be an artist talk in the exhibition with Roxana Rios and the curator Philipp Freytag. Free of charge, without registration

How do artists create public sphere through performance?
In this kick-off event of the summer semester, performance-artists, scholars and activists Edka Jarząb and Azadeh Ganjeh will share insights and practices around their work on intervening in the public sphere through performance in Poland and Iran.

The dynamic between online and offline practices has played a significant role in both contexts. In Iran the digital sphere has been central to organising protests in the past, which is why it has recently become a target of government-imposed internet-blackouts. In Poland, the resistance against the abortion-ban during the pandemic was marked by a creative gathering of voice-presences online, which fed back to the streets during lock-down.

The class for performative arts at HGB, co-led by Jule Flierl and Anna Zett, will host an encounter in which Edka Jarząb and Azadeh Ganjeh meet, witness and interview each other. Edka Jarząb will give a lecture on her sound activism and the biopolitics of voice, followed by a practice session with the group.

Azadeh Ganjeh will share her research on counter-publics in Iran, exploring practices of protest and care. She will invite the public to engage with concepts drawn from her research in a moment of collective physical practice.

The event will with a conversation between the co-leaders of the class Jule Flierl and Anna Zett, and their guests Edka Jarząb and Azadeh Ganjeh.

Edka Jarząb is a sound artist practicing deep listening as a starting point for sound activism, exploring the biopolitics of voice and its role as a bridge between private and public. Using radio waves, extended voice techniques, field recording and electronics - she creates audiospheres for her personal and collaborative performance works and installations.
Passionate about the sonic environment, she is organising workshops and sound walks rooted in different schools of acoustic ecologies, and works as a mentor in different projects (Unsound Summer Lab, Field Studies).

Co-founder of Radio Kapitał, a Warsaw based community radio station, where produces poetic radio plays and interventions. She has collaborated with experimental studio WORM in Rotterdam and the interdisciplinary platform Q-O2 based in Brussels.

She leans towards the physical experience of sound and reflections on perception as a relational experience. Her texts can be found in publications on sound ecology or biopolitics of voice and public space, such as "Going Out.Walking. Listening. Soundmaking," edited by Elena Biserna or "Empowering Aesthetics" by Denisa Tomkova (Bloomsbury, 2025)

Azadeh Ganjeh is a Scholar, performance artist, dramaturge, and activist, and a member of the Rebel-IST-hah! collective. Born in Tehran-Iran, she holds a Master's in Theatre Directing from Tehran Art University and a Doctorate in Philosophy-Theatre Studies from Bern University (2017). Azadeh specialises in creating socially engaged and site-specific performances, participatory performances, performative interventions in urban public spaces, and performance for social-political empowerment. Her research interests encompass Narratives and Politics of the stage, the performativity of protests and public interventions, the Performative engagement of body and space, Aesthetics of performativity and politics of space, and activism in performance art and academia.

After serving as a professor at Tehran University and moving to exile, she has lectured extensively across Europe. Since April 2022, she has been a researcher and lecturer at the University of Hildesheim. In October 2024, she was appointed Professor of Performance Art in Social Context at the Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen, Ottersberg. Driven by her commitment to merging artistic practice with critical research on performance and activism, she is an associate member at the Collaborative Research Centre 1512 "Intervening Arts" at Freie Universität Berlin.

Organised as part of (Un)Learning Digitalities - Programme on the Practice and Theory of the Digital with Prof. Jule Flierl(Class for Performative Arts) at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.

The project is co-financed by the European Union and is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon State Parliament.

Kurzsuechtig is a film festival especially for short films from Central Germany (Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia). Every year in April, we show the best short films in the categories animation, documentary, fiction and experimental during the five-day festival. The most promising sound artists are honoured in the Film Music & Sound Design competition. In the competition for Extended Reality, we present current projects from the fields of XR and 360 degrees in an interactive tour.

A co-operation of the ECAL with the HGB Type Design Class and the HGB Gallery


The "Atlas" exhibition was developed in collaboration between the ECAL (Lausanne School of Art and Design) and the Type Design class at the HGB Leipzig. It provides an overview of what type design is, what it can achieve visually and how it is used in our everyday lives. "Atlas" presents experimental letterforms, extensive font families, diverse typefaces and the interface between craft and contemporary graphic design. The exhibition offers a space that is accessible not only to experts, but also to a wider audience.
The exhibition was conceived especially for the HGB Gallery in collaboration with the type design class of Prof Ondřej Báchor at the HGB Leipzig and features student work from both ECAL and HGB Leipzig. Following its premiere in Turin, the German premiere exhibition will be presented in Leipzig - the second stop on its international tour before travelling on to New York, Paris and Tokyo:

"JUST A PIECE OF CAKE?" is a work of art created by Inga Kruse in collaboration with members of all levels of the Rheinischer LandFrauenverband e.V. and its 13 district associations. It thematises the multifaceted past, present and future of the Rheinische LandFrauen - an association that campaigns for the interests of women in rural areas. These women are often confronted with the cliché of the trivial coffee party. Inga Kruse takes up this aspect and questions the cliché. Through her work, she visualises the coffee table of the LandFrauen as a place of exchange, support and democratic, political debate. In this way, the work reveals the importance of rural women with regard to the active participation of women in processes in rural areas in a variety of details.

"JUST A PIECE OF CAKE" invites visitors to the Neuss State Garden Show to linger at the artwork and gain a deeper insight into the everyday life of Rhineland rural women while enjoying a snack - or a cake.

The first discussion in the exhibition "In the Face of Time" brings together three artists who cannot work without figures in their painting, but who use them in very different ways.

Ivana de Vivanco constructs narratives with literary, mythological or historical backgrounds and goes far beyond pure painting: she incorporates sculpture, installations and multimedia into her works. You. Norbert Wagenbrett is dedicated to the depiction of people in their ambiguity: his portraits are never harmonious or symmetrical, but are characterised by inner fractures, thoughts and question marks. Julia Tomasi Müntz concentrates on inner life, emotions and situations rather than on realistic depiction.

Works by Müntz and Wagenbrett can be seen in the exhibition. Twelve students from de Vivanco's painting and graphics class have intervened in the collection exhibition.

The discussion will focus on the works in the exhibition, on painting in Leipzig today and in the past and on why the figure - the portrait - is scrutinised just like painting itself and at the same time remains a constant in art.
The discussion will be moderated by curator Olga Vostretsova.

A sound can touch, irritate and connect. So can typography!

For its 30th anniversary, the Leipziger Typotage is focussing on the relationship between type and sound - on the Sound of Type. Because typography can be experienced not only visually: it has rhythm, tempo, volume and pauses. What does typography sound like? What acoustic, musical or linguistic qualities are contained in letters, words and typefaces? And how do sound, voice and rhythm influence our perception of type?

Renowned speakers have been invited to look at and discuss the topic from their very different perspectives. More information and programme.

It's spring.

And away from the collections, museums and galleries, a world of images has been sprouting up for centuries that does not care about art historical categorisation. On the fringes of public attention, there is an image production that does not primarily want to be art, but rather follows a broad spectrum of impulses: from graphic self-assurance to the unconcerned handling of pictorial material to images that fulfil a practical purpose and make themselves useful.

With his selection of books, Christoph Feist, Professor of drawing and image, would like to focus on this "marginalised" aspect.

In these books you can see a whole bouquet of expressions that vibrate between the serious and the silly, the sacred and the profane, the frightening and the entertaining, the difficult and the supposedly simple.

For the "Hidden Treasures" exhibition series, publications from the HGB Library 's otherwise inaccessible stacks are presented. Often, only a subtly placed colour-coded bookmark or a coloured underlay indicates that this is an exhibition exhibit.

On the occasion of the Museum Night, fashion design from Berlin, Halle (Saale), Weimar and London will be presented as a freely choreographed production under the title "Schau, Mode". Supported by performers and dancers and framed by the live music of Sophie Soraya and a picturesque, graphic backdrop, fashion and graphics merge into a wordless theatre of light and movement.

The joint museum night of the cities of Halle and Leipzig is a cultural highlight in the annual programme of both cities. The doors of the HGB Gallery will also be open from 18:00 to 24:00 and the exhibition ECAL A Typographic Atlas will be on show.

Read everything, read nothing more. A reading diary, a transcript, notes from and about a utopian, exquisite, well-read, as yet unread place. A lecture, an attempt forward, from a low, from a high and always into another text, into the memories of texts or the observation of the world.

Encountering the world and all its events by reading, responding by reading, escaping and coming to terms with them by reading. What are you reading? I read everything and nothing, both at the same time. A lecture performance made of traces, creating further traces. Fragments, pieces of reading, scraps, networks of a (co-)divided whole (with fringes and snails). Reading as a way of travelling. Reading as a search for acts of solidarity, for paths and trails. An evening about z/reading life in a z/read world.

AI technologies are fundamentally changing how images are created, edited, distributed, described and viewed. Their influence on visual culture and contemporary art practice is one of the most visible phenomena in this field, which is dominated by opaque technical processes.

The comprehensive thematic exhibition will occupy both exhibition spaces of the SCHIRN with around 40 works, including video installations, graphics, sculptures and photographs. The SCHIRN is presenting around 25 international artists, including Prof. Clemens von Wedemeyer, Nora Al-Badri, Nouf Aljowaysir, Julian Charrière, Grégory Chatonsky, Kate Crawford & Vladan Joler, Holly Herndon & Mat Dryhurst, Agnieszka Kurant, Trevor Paglen, Hito Steyerl, Sasha Stiles and Taller Estampa.

A broad spectrum of topics is examined, including resources and environmental factors as well as questions of perception, machine vision or facial and emotional recognition. The works address topics ranging from micro-labour and the establishment of alternative histories to possible visions of the future. Other aspects include so-called AI slop and slopaganda (the use of AI-generated images as a new form of political propaganda). A series of time capsules - small cabinets of curiosities - link the present with the past in the show, thus embedding the current changes brought about by new technologies in a historical context.
