Study Award from the Friends of the HGB Leipzig and Sparkasse Leipzig

The Friends of the HGB are the initiators and sponsors of this award. All HGB students who have not yet registered for their diploma (and are not master students) are eligible to apply for this grant. The jury consists of the board of the Friends of the HGB and two students.

Meisterschüler*innen Award by G2 Kunsthalle

The award, sponsored by the G2 Kunsthalle, is endowed with 10,000 euros and is announced annually in cooperation with the HGB Leipzig. The award is presented once a year to one of the HGB’s Meisterschüler*innen (Postgraduate) classes. All graduates who have successfully completed their Meisterschüler*innen program in March or September of the current year are eligible to participate. By establishing this cross-media and cross-class master student award, the G2 Kunsthalle provides targeted and direct support to young artists at the beginning of their careers. The goal is to foster the development of contemporary art production in the local community.

Respectively HGB 2026
Prize of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and the Friends of HGB

The HGB Leipzig and the HGB Friends e.V. are jointly organizing a prize to promote artistic and creative works or projects that are dedicated to the topic of ‘Studying at the HGB’ and focus on social ‘togetherness’. Its concept is based on student initiatives that have designed social spaces at the academy and developed artistic projects that have involved other students and academy members and created new situations through their experimental dynamics.

Birkner Prize

The Birkner Foundation was established in memory of the Leipzig-based illustrator and book designer Karl-Heinz Birkner, who studied at the former Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade between 1943 and 1950. It was created from the estate of the artist, who passed away in 1995. Eight of his heirs and friends, most of whom are from the Leipzig area, established the nonprofit foundation. The foundation’s primary purpose is to promote culture and the arts. Each year, the Birkner Prize is awarded for outstanding achievements to students at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, preferably in the fields of illustration and book design. Through the acquisition and cataloging of artistic estates between 1998 and 2011, works of art were preserved for the general public and made accessible to the public.

Approved in 1997, the foundation is a foundation under civil law with legal capacity, headquartered in Leipzig. The Birkner Foundation is a foundation established by living individuals and sees itself as a community foundation for culture and the arts.

VNGart Prize

In collaboration with the VNG Foundation, the Academy of Visual Arts is announcing the VNGart Prize. This award is one of the few of its kind and is therefore regarded as an important platform for young artists in Central Germany. Volunteer work and social engagement have always been part of VNG’s identity. For over 15 years, the VNG Foundation has been actively committed to the cultural and social development of the region and supports artists from the region through VNGart. The VNGart Prize is intended not only to honor outstanding talent but also to promote artistic perspectives on social developments.
