"When the windows on the rehearsal stage are open in the morning for ventilation and the sunlight falls on the black floor, the light blue surface between the window frames suddenly looks strangely artificial. It's as if someone had installed an LED wall at the edge of the set to give the morning break scene as realistic an ambient light as possible."

In The Age of Performance, media artist and director Tobias Klett sets out in search of the edges of the staging of reality. The work is based on a present in which seeing and being seen by people is increasingly organised in a social matrix of images, in which performance has become the basic mode of shared reality. How do technologies for the production and distribution of images change the way people live together? Where does staging begin and is there anything beyond that?

The project is based on a compilation of 130 photographs taken between 2020 and 2025. All of the images were taken with a smartphone and were originally published on social media. The triptych curated by Markus Dreßen for Galerie Jochen Hempel condenses central motifs from this series into a visual structure and can be seen at Galerie Jochen Hempel from 25 April to 27 June 2026.
