The lecture performance "The User and the Beast" examines how HTTP cookies (advertising technologies) monitor and commercially analyse users and their data. This lecture performance highlights the increasingly unbalanced exchange of information between users and organisational networks. Through ongoing online interactions and the mechanisation of gestures, users' physical bodies are subtly but noticeably compressed as their presence in the virtual world grows. This shift significantly increases the power and influence of companies that exploit and profit from this dynamic.
Joana Moll (*1982, Barcelona) is an artist, researcher and Professor of Networks at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Her work critically examines how techno-capitalist narratives influence the literacy of machines, humans and ecosystems. Her research interests include the materiality of the internet, surveillance, social profiling, interfaces and energy. She has presented her work worldwide in renowned institutions, museums, universities and festivals, including Biennale di Venezia, Art Basel, MAXXI, MMOMA, MACBA, Laboral, CCCB, ZKM, Bozar, Naturkundemuseum Berlin, Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK), Ars Electronica, HeK Basel, Photographer's Gallery, Korean Cultural Foundation Center, Chronus Art Center, New York University, Georgetown University, Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University, Rutgers University, University of Cambridge, Goldsmiths University of London, University of Illinois, Concordia University, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, ETH Zurich, École d'Art d'Aix en Provence, British Computer Society, The New School, CPDP 2019, Transmediale, FILE and ISEA, to name but a few. Her work has been extensively featured internationally in media such as The New York Times, The Financial Times, Der Spiegel, National Geographic, Quartz, Wired, Vice, The New Inquiry, Netzpolitik, El Mundo, O'Globo, La Repubblica, Fast Company, CBC, NBC or MIT Press, and she is co-founder of the Critical Interface Politics Research Group at HANGAR [Barcelona]. She was a research fellow at the BBVA Foundation, a fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin, artistic researcher in residence at the Critical Media Lab of the HGK Basel, guest lecturer at the University of Potsdam and visiting lecturer at the Escola Elisava in Barcelona. She is currently a Fellow at the Disruption Network Lab Institute in Berlin.
