Katharina Bayer's short film "A Provenance" is one of the 21 film productions selected for the German Competition of the 71st International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen. In "A Provenance", the origin of 32 chess pieces exemplifies the general tragedy of Jewish collections looted by the National Socialists and their rightful owners. Using archive images, the sounds of porcelain and the ongoing search for the pieces, the film sheds light on the fate of the Gustav von Klemperer porcelain collection during the National Socialist era, which is closely linked to the Dresden State Art Collections.

"A Provenance" will be shown as part of the German Competition on Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 17:00. The 80-minute programme will be followed by a discussion of the works shown with the filmmakers present.

In the exhibition "Overnight", the artists Francesco Del Conte, Johnny Linder, Bernd Oppl, Sandra Schubert, Yuki Tawada & Fuku Fukumoto, Dora Tishmann and Stig Marlon Weston explore the phenomena of darkness and light. They explore how shadows become figures and thoughts become reality. Their works visualise ephemeral processes, the unconscious and the mysterious. Using innovative techniques in photography and film, they show light pollution, for example, or transform burnt photographs into ceramic glazes. Fiction and reality collide in this transformative space.

In the exhibition, Sandra Schubert, artistic assistant in the photography programme at the HGB, is showing photo collages and baryta prints of seascapes as well as models of marine animals and a 22-page artist's book, all from the eighteen-part work complex Night Dive. The theme of the work is the relationship between man and nature. Nature in the form of the sea is a canvas onto which fears and desires, representation or the reproduction of human ideas are projected. Animals become cultural objects. The individual images are held together by an integrated text of naive omnipotence. "The reduced black and white images appear objective and cryptic, as if from an archive of uncanny memories." (Katharina Bosse, 2023) On a formal level, the artwork deals with photographically reproduced images, their creation and distribution.

The exhibition presents speculative clay artifacts created in the context of typography classes – inspired by the origins of writing and the question of how tools and materials shape the form of characters.

The Canadian-British artist Nina Davies (*1991) deals with current digital dance phenomena in her video works and performances. tangle up is a multi-channel video installation based on observations of my surroundings and discussions during a workshop. It explores the paradox of masculinity and intimacy: while intermale physicality is accepted in sports and combat, in other contexts it is quickly associated with non-normative sexualities and thus excluded from homosocial, non-sexual spaces. tangle up attempts to make non-sexual desire and male closeness visible and to question their underlying dynamics.

Who’s Singin’ Over There? or Ko to tamo peva is a 1980 Yugoslav film written by Dušan Kovačević and directed by Slobodan Šijan. It is a dark comedy and features an ensemble cast. The film tells a story about a group of passengers traveling by bus to Belgrade in 1941, during the last days of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, just before the Axis occupation of Yugoslavia.

The movie became an instant classic all over SFR Yugoslavia immediately upon its release. To this day, it endures as one of the most quotable movies ever to come out of the Balkans. Different scenes and dialogues are almost a part of general knowledge, with many entering public vernacular.

Between 1939 and 1945, the National Socialists deported around 20 million men, women and children from almost all parts of Europe to perform forced labour for the German economy. Around 13.5 million of them were deployed on the territory of the German Reich - this crime was also publicly visible and commonplace in Leipzig.

The lecture takes a look at this chapter of history and sheds particular light on the life stories of those who fought back against their exploitation and the National Socialist regime.

80 years after the Allied victory over Germany, the aim is to make the perspectives of those who were actually liberated audible. Their experiences, their courage and their voices are at the centre of this evening.

The works that artburst berlin e.V. is showing at the Culterim Backshop Gesundbrunnen in May 2025 under the title "aus der Asche" (from the ashes) revolve around the theme of "heat".
Conceived as a double exhibition, the first part "brennen glühen flirren" in October 2024 was dedicated to the causes and manifestations of heat. The works on display told personal stories, used heat as a medium and thematised its invisible presence.
But heat is far more than an individual or emotional phenomenon. How do we deal with it? What strategies have we developed to cope with its extremes? And can a longed-for Eden perhaps even emerge from its ashes?
The second part of the exhibition focusses on dealing with heat and warmth. Nine positions take a look at the influences, changes and transformative power - between destruction and creation, danger and possibility.
In the exhibition, HGB graduate Sophie Constanze Polheim shows her work "Fehlerteufel", with which she completed her media art diploma in the class for installation and space with Joachim Blank in 2023.

From 9 to 10 May 2025, the Videonale invites art academies from Alfter, Berlin, Cologne, Paris and Leipzig to come together as part of VIDEONALE.20. The HGB Leipzig is represented by the expanded cinema class of Prof. Clemens von Wedemeyer and Mareike Bernien. The aim of the programme is to become familiar with the Videonale as a festival for video and time-based art forms and its structure, to be able to take individual time for the 26 works of the VIDEONALE.20, to promote the exchange of students from different universities, to present their own works and to enter into a joint discussion about resilience in art creation and the phenomenon of perseverance.

The screening on 9 May and 10 May will take place at the Schaumburg, Hochstadenring 49 A, Bonn Nordstadt. The Schaumburg is a former workshop hall that is used as an exhibition and event venue. The screenings are open to the public and can be attended free of charge without registration.

We are celebrating VIDEONALE.20 and thus 40 years of festival history as a major festival of encounters with video art and its makers. 26 international historical and contemporary works of video art can be seen from 11 April to 18 May 2025 in an elaborate exhibition presentation at the Kunstmuseum Bonn and at six exhibition stations in the city of Bonn. The Kunstmuseum and the stations in the city form the VIDEONALE.20 route, which can be explored individually with the Videonale city map or together on guided tours and guided walks. This screening critically examines how digital environments shape bodily autonomy, identity, and free will through movement and dance. It explores the impact of predictive algorithms, market-driven technologies, and game mechanics on agency and decision-making. Aurora Digitalis is a screening format dedicated to time-based digital films that create alternative worlds with game engines, among other tools, and renegotiate these worlds in their identities, virtual bodies and socio-economic structures. Through speculative narrative forms, the understanding of game mechanics and avatars, they question the ideological foundations of digital technologies and open up critical perspectives on power structures and future concepts. The screening includes films from international positions as well as HGB alumni.

Following "Rethinking Nature" and "Rethinking Identity", "Rethinking Photography", the third part of this trilogy and part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP), marks an important step in contemporary photographic discourse. Launched in 2013, the EMOP Arendt Award is a prestigious award for emerging visual artists who are honoured for their artistic talent and evolving photographic practice.

From a pool of artistic positions proposed and discussed by the curators of the EMOP network under this theme, the following five artists, all living and working in Europe, have been nominated for the EMOP Arendt Award 2025: Sylvie Bonnot (Paris), Marta Djourina (Berlin), Raisan Hameed (Leipzig), Simon Lehner (Vienna) and Paulo Simão (Lisbon).

The Other Line is the result of ten years of research into the still marginalized cultural scene of Novi Sad in the late 1960s and 70s. The short but productive work of the artists' movement is directly linked to the creative centers of the former Yugoslavia, but also to international developments in the cultural sector (e.g. VII Biennale de Paris, 19th Berlinale). For the communist establishment, the movement became a threat - the leading figures were replaced, magazines were banned, films were locked away and some artists were brought to court, two of them even going to prison.

For the first time, the exhibition sheds light on the role of telecommunications technology as a colonial instrument of power. In 1914, together with the radio stations in Kamina (Togo) and Windhoek (Namibia), it was part of the German Empire's flagship project, which aimed to establish its claim to technological leadership by expanding a global communications network.

The "large-scale radio network" as a global instrument of power also secured its position of supremacy in the colonies. "Signals of power. Nauen, Kamina, Windhoek" invites visitors to trace the dynamics between communication technology and power that are still at work today.

Three positions conceived for this exhibition by the artists Tuli Mekondjo (Namibia), Madjé Ayité (Togo) and Frederike Moormann and Angelika Waniek (Germany) offer different starting points for an exploration of the theme.Dieter Daniels and Juliane Jaschnow will be using three films and an archive wall with partly unpublished material to place the historical dimension in context.

The grid is far more than a mere system of organisation - in the artistic examination it becomes a tool for working or a formal element of the work itself. The grid becomes a constitutive element of an aesthetic experience. The exhibition shows how the grid can be interpreted and used in a variety of ways, and at the same time documents how different the visual effect corresponding to the grid can be. It can serve as a mathematical basis, as the skeleton of a work or take centre stage, appear in the pictorial space itself and function as an independent figure. This gives rise to different and new questions. We cordially invite you to pursue these questions and to engage with the exhibition as an open space for thought and negotiation.

The background to the exhibition is the seminar led by Maria Schumacher with students from Kerstin Drechsel's painting and printmaking class and Ivana de Vivanco's painting and printmaking class. The grid as an artistic medium was analysed in theoretical discussions and practical trials. In addition to the individual works, a Riso booklet was created that tells the story of a collaborative exploration of the grid.

The artist and author Anna Zett (*1983 in Leipzig) describes herself as a witness, host and performer of encounters with the unknown. Rooted in dissident and queer perspectives and informed by cultural theory, filmmaking, dance and group analysis, Zett's artistic practice questions structures of oppression and invites free association and recreation in the present moment. This work results in pulsating videos, experimental radio plays, analytical texts, uncanny objects, tangible installations and participatory live formats, such as the long-term artistic research "Post-Socialist Group Improvisation". Through rhythmic montage and dialogue-based improvisation, Zett's videos unfold a unique, non-linear narrative style that invites the viewer to remain curious about their own thoughts and feelings. The holding and letting go of meaning seems to be an environmental and somatic process that cannot be controlled by humans alone and certainly not by a single person.

The audio play entitled "She is a rose in the valley" is a contemporary exploration of the biblical collection of songs in the Song of Solomon. The description of physical love, erotic rapprochement, its detail, intensity and longing is unique in the Bible, and the radio play also addresses timeless motifs such as love, relationships, sensuality, dialogue and female socialisation in this context.

Based on love as a subjective and yet collective experience, the atmospheric images of the text and the poetry of sensuality, there will be a communal banquet after the radio play screening. The communal and community-building experience is thus also placed in the culinary focus.

Food and drinks to share are therefore expressly welcome!

In this solo exhibition, Christian Weihrauch, HGB Professor of Painting, Drawing and Composition as well as for

At the centre of the exhibition is a soldier's memorial from 1926, which is located near the IDEAL art space on Neustädter Markt. The exhibition opens the dialogue about the historical significance of the monument between the two world wars as well as its relevance and impact today. The monument, which was originally erected to commemorate the fallen of the First World War, is today the scene of controversial debates. Looking beyond the memorial: what canon of remembrance is enshrined in the city and what could an urban remembrance policy look like that reflects the multi-layered heritage of our pluralistic society? With an ongoing programme and discussion forums, the project pursues the concrete question of how to deal with the monument in the future.

How do reviews shape our perception of places? The workshop 1 ★ Review Tour explores the history, impact, and political dimension of rating systems – from the first travel guides of the 19th century to today’s data-driven platforms like Google Maps. Together with the artists of Mediengruppe Bitnik, students from the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) and the Athens School of Fine Arts investigate how rankings, stars, and scores influence decisions and the power behind seemingly neutral numbers.

As part of the workshop, participants will install the browser extension of the same name, which only displays 1-star reviews – a shift in perspective that reveals everyday life through the lens of failed expectations. The workshop offers a critical and performative approach to digital rating practices and questions, among other things, how digital infrastructures are changing the relationship between tourist sites and their perception.

The workshop is open to all students and will take place online on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 4:00 PM.

enorê is a visual artist working with ceramics and 3D technology to explore the entanglements between virtuality, physical embodiment and matter. Primarily working with 3D printed ceramics, they use clay as a catalyst to question how digital data can be mediated through physical processes, with an interest in clay's potential to hold, erode, and reconfigure form. This talk will centre their ongoing research into the errors and glitches that emerge when translating digital data into clay, and how the body can act as a key agent in navigating and disrupting these processes - challenging dominant narratives around control in digital making.

RAP – For many, it's a reality of life and everyday practice. Some sit down, write lyrics and work on their rhymes. Others mumble melodic passages in which single words can no longer be understood. The music produced could not be more different. However, one thing is clear: the artistic practice of rappers is not limited to rapping alone.

In “You Wanna Rap?” we offer space for approaches from a variety of perspectives. The exhibition space will be the starting point for a wide range of activities. We discover, reflect and discuss while visiting the exhibition, in curatorial tours, at a transdisciplinary panel, at a Rap Bingo! Evening with a feminist focus, a freestyle session, at Rap-Your-Shopping-List workshops, a beginner-friendly karaoke evening, a Bring-Your-Own-Vinyl listening session and at concerts and performances.

The Sandwich as a Medium of Cultural Encounter: A project that transforms the diverse possibilities between two slices of bread into a space for exchange and creative reflection.On May 25, 2025, a special happening will take place in Chemnitz.

Artists Marie Donike and Johannes Specks will prepare sandwich recipes derived from a wide range of individual experiences and culinary contexts. These sandwiches—each connected to its own story—serve as a starting point for conversations and encounters. What is usually a quick bite becomes a collective experience in which biographies and taste preferences intersect and complement one another.The sandwiches presented are based on recipes, ingredients, and stories submitted by the public in response to an open call. The diversity of the recipes reveals how differently a seemingly everyday dish can be interpreted. Each sandwich reflects familial traditions, cultural influences, and personal memories.The entire process—from collecting recipes to the performative preparation and communal consumption—will be documented and archived using various media.

On June 27, 2025, a reenactment will be presented at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. There, a new perspective will be offered on the sandwich as an artistic and social phenomenon that transcends boundaries and becomes a symbol of transcultural cuisine.

Because I own my body. My body is not a political playground, it's not a place for legislation, it's mine, and it's my future.’

With her statement during the #Slutwalk protest march in New York in 2018, Samirah Raheem went viral. Bodies that deviate from heteronormative masculinity are apolitical issue. Still. And above all, more and more. They are an ongoing battlefield of exclusionand patriarchal power struggles.

Not a Playground is a curatorial invitation to local performers to actively appropriate an institutional space that is in transition between two exhibitions on (political) power relations and (female)identity. The immersive performance inscribes itself in this intermediate zone as a feminist negotiation of bodies and power in relation to space.

The performance will take place at Space01 / Kunsthaus Graz. It will also be streamed vialivestream on Instagram as a temporary hijacking of the digital toxic space.

The exhibition ‘1933-1945HGB’ attempts to provide an insight into the history of the HGB Leipzig (then the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade) during the National Socialist era.

Research into the history of the HGB has found incomplete records. An archive of the academy was not kept continuously. Particularly in times of political upheaval, documents were arbitrarily and deliberately destroyed and carelessly handled. The documents from the period between 1933 and 1945 are particularly fragmentary, so numerous secondary sources must be used to reconstruct the events. Research in the archives and library of the HGB, the state archives in Leipzig and Dresden, the digital collection of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York and a review of current thematic literature form the basis for the material in the exhibition. Excerpts and reproductions from documents, archive holdings and journals will provide an insight into this chapter of the institution's history in chronological order.

Important information can also be gleaned from biographical accounts of former teachers at the university: The illustrator Hugo Steiner-Prag, artistic director of the Propyläen publishing house, president of the International Book Exhibition (1919-1927) had held a professorship at the academy since 1910. He was immediately dismissed in 1933 due to his Jewish origins. The painter and graphic artist Willi Geiger also lost his teaching position at the university in 1933. In 1934, the Dresden ministry appointed Walter Gasch, an active NSDAP member, as deputy director. In 1937, Hans-Alexander Müller, teacher of the woodcut class, and the graphic artist and illustrator Dr Hellmuth Weissenborn were forced to leave the academy. Both were married to Jewish women. An important source for the period between 1940 and 1944 is the magazine ‘Wächterstraße 11’, published by the Nazi Students' Association, which contains letters from soldiers and reports from everyday life at the academy. The only new foundation at that time was the Institute for Colour Photography in 1940, whose director was involved with female students in the recording of monuments as part of the ‘Führerauftrag Monumentalmalerei’. With the current state of knowledge, it is not possible to provide a complete account of the events, but the exhibition will highlight gaps. The exhibition also presents projects and publications from the university that have recently dealt with National Socialism and its effects. The presentation aims to invite further joint research.

The film essay ‘Dürer's Heirs’ by Lutz Dammbeck from 1996 forms a bridge to the early GDR period and the connection between art and ideology in the exhibition on the upper floor of the hgb gallery.

The exhibition will be flanked by a supporting programme. More information coming soon.

In autumn 2025, HGB Magazine #3 will be published as a result of the HGB seminar on right-wing continuities from 2021 to 2023. The seminar was organised by Julia Blume, Nanne Buurman and Julia Kurz, who also formed the editorial team for this themed magazine.

A DESIGN CAMPUS Lab as part of the exhibition Craft as Myth. Between Ideal and Everyday Life

Silk production is one of the world’s oldest cultural techniques, with many myths surrounding its history and origins in China. Long, fine and extremely durable threads are obtained from the cocoons of silkworms by carefully unwinding them. The resulting textiles are the result of thousands of years of craftsmanship and design. At the same time, silk is an example of complex global exchange processes: Textiles and their patterns are material carriers of a cultural transfers. Their production and distribution is closely linked to global trade routes, as a result of which both silkworms and mulberry trees were distributed across the continents by humans. The exploitation of the natural raw material illustrates the subjugation and utilization of nature for human needs. The so-called “silk road” is a symbol for early global trade, often accompanied by colonization and exploitation.

The audio-visual installation examines silk as a global cultural phenomenon and as a product of a close relationship between humans and animals. In an interplay of artistic, creative and documentary perspectives, it questions human-centred perspectives and colonial narratives. The act of listening opens up space for holistic perspectives and polyphonic narratives that reveal the multi-layered relationships and dependencies between animals, humans, the environment, politics and production.

What is Russian? What is behind this unrepresentative generalisation that equates and erases almost 200 official national and ethnic identities of the Russian Federation? What does „Strangers Identity“ mean and why is it important right now to talk post-Soviet and decolonial about the still imperial Russia?

Five panellists with experience of life in Russia and mixed national identity talk about their experiences of life in Russia and in emigration. What does their apolar identity, woven from multiple contexts, mean to each of them, and why is the concept of the nation-state misleading?

At the end of the event, the panellists will discuss with the moderator and the guests what decoloniality means to them in the context of imperial Russia and how they work with debunking the dangerous stereotype that everything that comes from Russia is automatically Russian.

Alexandra Velichko (she/her) is an artist, photographer and graphic designer from Russia with a focus on contemporary photography. She currently lives in Halle, Germany, and studies photography and media at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.

Anastasiia Yakhtantsidi (she/her) is an artist who works with beeswax, memory, forests and archives and currently lives in Leipzig. Her work revolves around the memory of places and the development of an artistic approach to natural historiography.

Anna Rotaenko (she/her) is an artist born in 1990 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She lived in the Russian Federation and studied at the Rodchenko School and in the workshop of Sergei Bratkov (Ukraine), among others. In her work, she deals with social issues and the expanded concept of documentary film. Rotaenko's projects are mostly text-based and take the form of installations - including interactive formats - as well as videos. Her focus is on the interface between digital and physical spaces, developing multimodal narratives that explore the entanglements of human and non-human experience as a result of extractivist politics.

Lesya Kuranova (she/her) is an interdisciplinary designer from Moscow, Russia. She lives in Halle and studies at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. In her practice she uses graphic design as a tool for writing and designing.

Yura Yurkin (no pronouns) is a writer and decolonial activist based in Essen, Germany. He works on projects related to the identity of the Komi-Permyak people, who historically live in the north-east of the European part of Russia and to whom he himself belongs. In the past, he has worked in various Russian museums and cultural projects.

Daria Makarova (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher from Russia. She has been living in Germany since 2022 and studies media art in the Expanded Cinema class at the HGB Leipzig. She has also been a Fridrich Ebert Foundation fellow since 2023. Her practice focuses on the recontextualisation of historical narratives and patriarchal power structures, which she transforms into poetics with a subversive effect. Central themes of her work are the exploration of language forms, state violence and the attempt as a utopian act.

Interactive In-Game Online Lecture Performance 

Los Santos, the digital world of popular action game Grand Theft Auto V, isn’t just inspired by Los Angeles in terms of its cityscape. Like its real world counterpart, it’s also one of the most popular film sets in history: No other game has hosted as many machinimas - films recorded in video games - and game art projects.

Together with the audience, Total Refusal goes on an art walk - or rather drive - through the digital metropolis, touring the city spots which were used as film sets and performance locations. They shine a light on the practice of appropriating contemporary video games for artistic purposes and discuss the potential of art in deconstructing the mechanisms of hyperrealist media.

My mother told me once when i was a kid:
“Never talk about people who are not there. It is a gossip.”

Hiwa K graduated from High School in Iraq and continued his self-education meeting different intellectuals, visual artists, musicians and theatre artists. The major fields of these informal and non-systematic studies were European literature and philosophy, learnt from available books translated into Arabic. After moving to Germany at the age of 25, he studied music; specifically he was a pupil of the Flamenco master Paco Peña. Hiwa K’s works, escape normative aesthetics but give a possibility of another vibration to vernacular forms, oral histories (Chicago boys, 2011), modes of encounter (Cooking with Mama, 2006) and political situations (This lemon tastes of apple, 2011). The repository of his references consists of stories told by family members and friends, found situations as well as everyday forms that are the products of pragmatics and necessity. His own education leaves a strong impression within his works, which are the result of a continuous critique of the art education system and the professionalization of art practice, as well as the myth of the individual artist.

Consequently, many of his works are characterized by a strong collective and participatory dimension, and have to do with the process of the teaching and learning systems and an insistence on the concept of obtaining knowledge from everyday experience rather than doctrine Hiwa K was involved in various collective exhibitions such as La Triennale in Paris and the “Edgware Road Project” at the Serpentine Gallery in London. His Chicago Boys While We Were Singing They Were Dreaming project is continuously hosted by important international institutions, such as Alternativa Festival in Gdansk,the CASCO in Utrecht, the Serpentine Gallery in London, New Museum/ NYC, MACRO/Rome, MuHKA and MUSAC in León. The exhibition projects of the Kommunale Galerie Nord are realised as a cooperative management model between the Kunstverein Tiergarten e.V. and the Department of Art, Culture and History in the Mitte district office. With the kind support of the district development fund of the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.

Making art, storing art, exhibiting art and viewing art are always also administrative acts. The often precarious life and work administration of freelance artists and curators includes the acquisition of funding and project documentation, the maintenance of collections and personnel support, visitor "management" and the maintenance of technical exhibition infrastructure. The exhibition series Artministration by the Office for Curatorial Research explores the fields of work of artists and curators with a view to private, professional and public administrative practices and processes as well as the associated forms of knowledge.

To kick off the Artministration series, visitors are invited to the new spaces of the Office for Curatorial Research to submit thematic proposals for an Open Call exhibition. Following the publication of the Open Call, the artistic applications received will be juried in a participatory process together with the visitors and finally presented as part of an exhibition in the Office for Curatorial Research. The office team will offer curatorial advice during office hours.

The results of the exhibition further broaden the thematic range of administrative acts in the field of art and culture and set priorities for the upcoming editions of the series Artministration in other administrative architectures.

The Snail Eye Comic Festival is an annual event in Kolonadenstraße that brings together comic lovers and artists. Young art students from the HGB are also represented.

In addition to a lively comic market, visitors can expect exhibitions in shop windows and shops, comic readings, talks, lectures, workshops and animated film screenings. The focus is on networking and exchange between professional comic creators, comic fans and art enthusiasts. The festival offers a varied stage programme with open-air readings and moderated talks as well as walk-in exhibitions that involve the local business community. An inspiring event for everyone who appreciates the world of comics and art!

On Wednesday, 18 June 2025, the annual exhibition of the Evening Academy will open in the Festsaal of the HGB. The HGB's Evening Academy offers courses in fine arts, applied and artistic photography and design every semester.

The opening will be accompanied by a collective sound performance at 20:30 in the atrium.

Master students from the university will be available to the participants as professional course instructors. In the joint summer exhibition in the HGB ballroom, the individual courses will show their results and open up for dialogue. Everyone is cordially invited!

The third edition of Aurora Digitalis explores border-crossings between digital and physical worlds and realities. At its core are questions of identity, technological saturation, and the shifting structures of social order. Through speculative scenarios, digital fictions, and mythological reinterpretations, the presented works examine how concepts of subjectivity, the body, and power are transformed in the digital age – and invite us to renegotiate the boundaries of what can be thought and represented.

Aurora Digitalis is a screening format dedicated to time-based digital films that create alternative worlds with game engines, among other tools, and renegotiate these worlds in their identities, virtual bodies and socio-economic structures. Through speculative narrative forms, the understanding of game mechanics and avatars, they question the ideological foundations of digital technologies and open up critical perspectives on power structures and future concepts. The screening includes films from international positions as well as HGB alumni.

Organised as part of (Un)Learning Digitalities - Programme on the Practice and Theory of the Digital with Clemens von Wedemeyer(Expanded Cinema class) and Eliza Goldox (Office for Digital Teaching) at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig in cooperation with the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig.

The project is co-financed by the European Union and co-funded by public funds allocated by the members of the Saxon State Parliament.

Mouth Archives project focuses on how the lives of communities are performed in recipes, anecdotes, jokes, songs, and rhythms. Tenuous and joyful, such living archives are the essence of the project, which will consist of a series of culinary interventions, sound performances, and storytelling evenings, highlighting and bringing together forms of resistance, resilience, togetherness, tenderness, and care in which the mouth is a focal point. It launches with the sound and food performance by Sōydivision, a collaborative platform and artist collective shaped by the lived experiences of the diaspora. Initially composed predominantly of Indonesian diaspora artists in Berlin, its constellation has since expanded to include diasporic artists of the global majority (an emerging, decolonial term that recognizes the lived realities of Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities who represent the majority of the world’s population) mostly based in Germany.

Rooted in the complexities of displacement, identity, and cultural hybridity, Sōydivision operates at the intersection of art and activism. 

The performance is part of the project Mund zu Mund | Mouth Archives, curated by Clarissa Aidar, Milena Gehrt and Anastasia Shestak in cooperation with Cinémathèque Leipzig.

The project Choreographies of Unsettlement examines frictions between spaces and times. The exhibition, accompanied by the publication, addresses time as an in-between space as well as temporalities of distances and proximities. 

One of the starting points for the development of this project was Madina Tlostanova's concept of unsettlement, which she describes in her book “Narratives of Unsettlement: Being out-of-joint as a generative human condition”, published in 2023. She defines unsettlement as “a condition characterized by a constant negotiation between belonging and not belonging, rootedness and displacement, a chronophobic fear of change”. 

Four artists focus on temporalities that elude them: in the cyclic movement of the sun (Aischa Gianna Müller), in the memory traces of the Sahara plants (Abdessamad El Montassir), in buried relics of riverbeds in the Kunlun Mountains (Yujia Liu), and in vanished mountains of limestone in Tatarstan (Gulshat Gubaidullina). 

These chronotopes, full of their own historical prejudices, unfold different stories and choreographies of the unsettlement of time and space. The project addresses not only the retrieval of landscapes and of collective memory, but also how these landscapes survive by embedding the various narratives surrounding them.

The project is funded by the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig and is being carried out as a final project of the Master's program Cultures of the Curatorial at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig.

The Sandwich as a Medium of Cultural Encounter: A project that transforms the diverse possibilities between two slices of bread into a space for exchange and creative reflection.On May 25, 2025, a special happening will take place in Chemnitz.

Artists Marie Donike and Johannes Specks will prepare sandwich recipes derived from a wide range of individual experiences and culinary contexts. These sandwiches—each connected to its own story—serve as a starting point for conversations and encounters. What is usually a quick bite becomes a collective experience in which biographies and taste preferences intersect and complement one another.The sandwiches presented are based on recipes, ingredients, and stories submitted by the public in response to an open call. The diversity of the recipes reveals how differently a seemingly everyday dish can be interpreted. Each sandwich reflects familial traditions, cultural influences, and personal memories.The entire process—from collecting recipes to the performative preparation and communal consumption—will be documented and archived using various media.

On June 27, 2025, a reenactment will be presented at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. There, a new perspective will be offered on the sandwich as an artistic and social phenomenon that transcends boundaries and becomes a symbol of transcultural cuisine.

CLASHES is a collection of manuals and tools from cultural producers who confront artistic and social practices.

The contributors come from different parts of the world and work with artistic means such as performance, theatre, film, textile design or architecture. They all foster spaces of social togetherness in which autonomous aesthetics emerge. As an open access publication, CLASHES functions as a platform. It gathers strategies, exercises and games and asks how practitioners deal with the clash of people, forms and positions in their work.

How can cultural practice become public when financial resources disappear and institutional frameworks start to erode? How can artistic and curatorial practices claim space and sustain their agency? How can publics not only be demanded but actively created - as an act, a gesture, a temporary structure? What forms of showing, listening, presence, and action remain possible beyond established spaces and temporalities?

no solid ground is a testing ground as intervention, a temporarily marked site in the urban space of Berlin that disrupts habitual uses and explores artistic spaces of action. It is an invitation to states of in-between, to a productive engagement with the uncertain, the invisible, the unpaid - the uncertain future of art and culture.

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, several artistic positions will become public for a moment throughout the day.

The HGB invites you to the Diploma Tour, which shows the final projects of this year's graduates. Visitors can look forward to exhibitions throughout the Academy building. Works by around 80 graduates in painting/graphics, photography, book art/graphic design and media art will be on display in around 20 exhibition rooms, organised by the graduates together with Ilse Lafer (Head of the HGB Gallery).

On the opening day, the HGB will once again celebrate its traditional summer party, which this year will be organised by media art students.

As part of the graduation ceremony on 11 July at the HGB Leipzig, Stephan Zerbe and Ulf Jung from the board of the Rössing Foundation will award the Rössing Prize for Photography 2025.

The Rössing Prize is awarded every two years by the Rössing Foundation among the graduates of the Photography programme at the HGB and is endowed with three prizes of € 1,000.
