Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) played a major part in Worpswede being regarded today as one of Europe’s most important artists’ villages. Within just a few years, she created an extensive body of work that was artistically unique, though it was not recognised until decades after her untimely death. Today, the painter is regarded as a pioneer of modern art.

The Paula Modersohn-Becker Art Prize is a living, creatively evolving tribute to this extraordinary artist. The district of Osterholz has been awarding the prize every two years since 2010. The exhibitions accompanying the art prize are held simultaneously at the Große Kunstschau Worpswede and the Barkenhoff.

Three prizes are awarded: the main prize, open to entrants from across Germany; a special prize for artists from Bremen and the district of Osterholz; and the Young Artists’ Prize for emerging artists aged 32 and under. The award ceremony will take place as part of the exhibition opening on 21 November.
