Issues relating to the environment and the climate crisis pose a fundamental challenge to familiar democratic structures – a challenge which, moreover, is increasingly being overlooked as it is overshadowed by other crises and sidelined by institutional overload, political inaction and powerful economic interests. Yet these issues touch upon the very foundations of how we (wish to) live together: how do the environment and democracy relate to one another? What happens when individual freedom clashes with the need to limit resources? And is it possible to conceive of a form of community that responds to the climate crisis not with less, but with more participatory decision-making? Further information...
