As part of a dialogue project organised by the IDEAL Kunstraum, Anna Sophie Gumz’s photographic work ‘off-stage’ takes centre stage in the public space. It will be accompanied during the exhibition opening by Hanako Emden’s reading performance ‘kleines licht’.
The photo series ‘off-stage’ portrays the reverse sides of election poster displays. Like the annual rings of a tree, faded textures, scratch marks and graffiti tell the overlooked stories of these image carriers, which are usually perceived merely as unassuming infrastructure. Transposed back into the outdoor space of the street on large billboard surfaces, the images reclaim the public space as a narrative stage. In addition to the billboard in front of IDEAL, the MdbK’s billboards at the Spinnerei (opposite Boesner) and at Ortfloff (Jahnallee 73) will also feature the exhibition.
‘kleines licht’ explores memories and the loss of supposed collectivity.
Commissioned and created in dialogue with the work ‘off-stage’ by Anna Sophie Gumz, this audiovisual reading attempts to recognise a dream within collective failure.
The 1990s in the capital, shaped by German reunification, and the turn of the millennium now serve as historical and geographical axes that shape Anna Sophie Gumz’s (born 1993 in Berlin) artistic perspective. She studied Fine Art at the HGB Leipzig and the ZHdK. She lives and works in Leipzig and Berlin. Hanako Emden (born 1996) is an artist and graphic designer.
