The exhibition “QUEER ART IN THE GDR?” and its comprehensive educational programme focus on queer artists from the GDR. Drawing on the varied biographies of nine artists and their works – including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photographs – the exhibition demonstrates how differently they dealt with the political and social conditions of their time. To what extent did their sexual orientation influence their artistic practice and professional development?
The HGB is exhibiting works by Jürgen Wittdorf, who studied at the HGB from 1952 to 1957. It was in Leipzig that he produced the most important series of his graphic work, including the cycle ‘Für die Jugend’ (‘For the Youth’), which is on display there. Also on display will be sketches and preparatory drawings, as well as historical documents – including photographs and newspaper reports – which provide context for Wittdorf’s life and work.

The project is an initiative of KVOST – Kunstverein Ost e.V. in collaboration with the University of Leipzig’s Curatorial Department and in partnership with the G2 Kunsthalle, the Gallery for Contemporary Art, the Academy of Visual Arts and Book Design in Leipzig, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Passage Kinos Leipzig.

Exhibition dates at the University: 15 October 2026 – 7 February 2027
Opening: 14 October 2026 at 7.00 pm
