For the first time, the exhibition "Transfer" presents printmaking works by students and teachers from the renowned workshops for graphic printing techniques at three art academies: HGB Leipzig, AdBK Munich, AdBK Nuremberg. Printmaking has often been declared dead and abolished in many art academies, but for some years now this art genre has been experiencing a new renaissance and is anything but lifeless. How are screen printing, woodcut and linocut, lead typesetting, etching, lithography/offset and risography used artistically today? The exhibition explores these and other questions and shows the different approaches or similarities of the respective art academies in a comparison.

In the HGB library, all media are categorised according to an "in-house" classification system. Other libraries use classifications such as "DDC" (Dewey Decimal Classification) or in German-speaking countries preferably "RVK" (Regensburger Verbundklassifikation) to make media searchable and findable, our holdings are too specialised for these rough classification systems. Marianne Seyfert, who developed a decimal classification system for the HGB library, recognised this back in the 1970s. The advantage is that we can easily make adjustments at any time, but the high degree of self-control we are subject to is problematic. Several classification points can be assigned to each title in the catalogue, but there is only one location.

In "Hidden Treasures No. 4 - Work in the Library", Ines Schaber and Susanne Keichel searched the HGB library for books on the subject of "work". The concept of "work" plays an important role in our teaching and in our artistic endeavours, but does not form a classification of its own in the library's classification system. In order to find books, the term must be thought of differently and the search must find other ways. We searched using keywords in the catalogue, our existing knowledge or simply by walking through the rows in the stacks. The resulting selection of books shows the possible presence of a topic that is not named in the system and yet is pervaded by it.

With the participatory performance Wenn das Summen sichtbar wird / When the hum becomes visible, artist Marta Pohlmann-Kryszkiewicz explores together with the performers how movements can influence the gaze through experience and how proximity and distance shift the usual spatial and physical boundaries. The impulses for action, which are conveyed via sound, deal with help, support and (in)security and were developed in collaboration with people with and without disabilities. The performance has been taking place in public places in and outside Leipzig since 2021 and is constantly evolving.

The exhibition aims to capture the traces and moments of everyday life experienced by two artists who have reflected on living in the unfamiliar context of another country. In the two video works, some grandmothers calmly recount their memories, which have slightly faded over the long passage of time. Additionally, there are two women who respond to these memories. They all exist within the temporal gap between the past and the present, as well as in two different spaces, Germany and Korea. Yet, they feel a connection between these distinct spaces and times through the medium of memory.

SMS - The new exhibition space run by a group of friends in the north-east of Leipzig is intended to be a place for collaborative exhibitions and more.
SMS stands for a lot of things, like "Short Message Service", "So Much Space" or "Searching Mysterious Synonyms", more aliterations in the form of various events are welcome.

On 10 and 11 January there will be a grand opening of the exhibition space with soup and drinks, gathered around piles of plates. There will be soooooooo much soup and soooooo many plates!

There will be two more exhibitions on the weekends of 24 and 31 January.

A banner moves across the Karl-Heine-Kanal. It is expansive. Visually, the action refers to the official political slogans of the GDR in public spaces, which propagated politically legitimised anti-fascism on large, oversized banners. In terms of content, the ambivalence of the slogan thematises the contradictions of the politics of remembrance.

"Remembrance as the highest form of forgetting" is an exhibition project by artist Ute Richter in collaboration with Angelika Waniek and curated by Kunstraum IDEAL. It thematises anti-fascist forms of remembrance and takes a special look at the culture of remembrance in the GDR and the continuities from the Nazi era to the present day.

The first act took place in November with the lecture "On discarding and experiencing the past: a contradictory model of remembrance" by Felicitas Kübler and a performance by Angelika Waniek in the city library. The third act is an exhibition from 16 March in the rooms of IDEAL and in public spaces.

This time: Annette Kisling in conversation with Andrzej Steinbach about the publication Verplaatst.

In Verplaatst, artist Annette Kisling captures Rotterdam’s urban transformation photographically while describing the city’s social shift. Kisling’s artistic oeuvre includes numerous photographic series that reflect her exploration of the multi-layered meaning of the architecture that surrounds us.

The Yellow Carpet series presents young film and media artists. The second evening will be organised by Ayala Shoshana Guy and Mikhail Tolmachev, who will present their various media works and concepts in conversation with Clemens von Wedemeyer.

The audience is invited to take part in the subsequent discussion in a salon-style setting on a yellow carpet.

Ayala Shoshana Guy, born in Jerusalem in 1992, studied Fine Arts at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. She is currently completing a Master's degree in Critical Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Her always very concise cross-media practice includes films and animations in which she deals with intergenerational trauma, for example. Works such as I Will Take Your Shadow have been presented at international festivals. In 2024 she was awarded the Birgit Jürgenssen Prize.

Mikhail Tolmachev, born in Moscow in 1983, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig and is currently completing his doctorate at the Bauhaus University Weimar. His artistic practice includes sound installations, photography, video works and artistic interventions. The focus is on the examination of documents and the politically charged construction of truth. Using a multi-layered methodology, he often works on transformations of archive material in order to scrutinise the possibilities and limits of memory and historiography. They have been shown, for example, at the Tretyakov Gallery Moscow or Tate Modern London.

Clemens von Wedemeyer is a filmmaker and video artist and has been a member of the Film and Media Art Department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts since 2020.

Those who are ashamed lose face, want to sink into the ground or at least escape the eyes of others. Shame always goes the whole hog, it punishes minor indelicacies as well as serious misdemeanours, participates in the most ancient emotional stock and is at the same time a reaction of the most subtle kind. If "shame is the great silencer", as author Lea Schneider writes, it is not surprising that she has lent herself to the image. Because it is almost impossible to abstract from a visual exposure, she must always - at least in her imagination - reckon with an audience before whose eyes she shows herself.

This performance character of shame has a long history of images of shame and defamation, which are still articulated today in the shaming dynamics of social media or can even become part of artistic strategies: When Nan Goldin demonstrated against the opioid manufacturer Sackler at the Guggenheim Museum in 2019, she carried a banner with the words "Shame on Sackler".

Where such forms of extrajudicial punishment always include a "moment of reification", because one is "robbed of one's sovereignty of action and interpretation" and becomes the "object of the gaze of others", as journalist Anette Köhler writes, there is also a demand to withdraw from the judging gaze from outside.

The panel will discuss examples such as the photographic work Social Justice 1: School by Susanne Keichel and ask how the interrelationship between shame and visibility can be understood in an artistic-activist way, where shame must be protected or overcome and who takes the right to the sovereignty of interpretation. When do images become sites of dishonour and accusation? How does Linda Hentschel combine "desire to look, fear of looking and prohibition of looking"? And can vulnerability be a weapon?

Developed as an episodic installation that unfolds through three iterations, punctuated by public events, On Seeking aims to acknowledge Berlin's critical artistic community and dialogue in a state of uncertainty marked by the disintegration of social structures, the crisis of counterculture or the erosion of solidarity. The project gathers artists in Berlin who share a background in the (post-)socialist context as well as research-based practice, reflecting on images of the future shaped by a possible dystopia. All participants have a history of running independent spaces and initiatives for art, in Budapest, Skopje and Berlin.
The project is about embracing the fluidity of artistic inquiry, emphasizing the value of process over the formality of presentation, turning the exhibition space into a site of ongoing collective experimentation, spontaneous and responsive artistic practice and dialogue.

Julie Hart (*1991 in Neustrelitz) presents in her diploma exhibition "Im Westen wir sie untergehn" works that were inspired by her post-reunification experiences. Her works are based on a participative, process-orientated practice that explores the aesthetics of upheaval and longing.

These tensions are reflected in the materiality and aesthetics of her works, which include installations, photography, moving image and book forms. The aesthetics of her works provide insights into the interplay between individual experiences and larger social dynamics. In doing so, Hart illuminates both personal and collective tipping points that move in the field of tension between dream and trauma.

Her works deal with inner and outer emotional landscapes and attempt to capture the complexity of processual developments. In the exhibition, Julie Hart poses the central question of how an aesthetic of connection can be created that makes the changeable and fragile visible.

The exhibition 'no matter what' focuses on the intensive handling of material and its inscribed traces, stories and effects.

Steel, aluminium, insulating materials and sheet metal are central elements of Valentina Plank and Len Bay's artistic exploration. The interplay between industrial production and the use of traditional craftsmanship reveals references to minimal art. But Plank and Bay go beyond this: their works are not limited to their external appearance alone. Through haptic and tactile properties, installations and sculptures become interactive containers that viewers can fill with their own experiences.

The exhibition also reflects the dialogue between the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and Burg Giebichstein in Halle, with the a&o Kunsthalle serving as a platform to provide a space for this interdisciplinary exchange.

Once again, HGB students from all disciplines who have not yet registered for their diploma and are not Meisterschüler*innen were eligible to apply for the 18th Study award of the HGB-Freundeskreis and Sparkasse Leipzig.
The jury will select four works from 62 submissions, one for each subject area.

How does the current generation of young adults see history and what answers are given to old questions today?

The exhibition at the MÄDLER ART FORUM comprises
- five handmade book objects with prints and texts from very different perspectives on Goethe's Faust,
- a graphic cassette with numerous prints and
- several original graphic posters.
