The exhibition ‘1933-1945HGB’ attempts to provide an insight into the history of the HGB Leipzig (then the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Trade) during the National Socialist era.

Research into the history of the HGB has found incomplete records. An archive of the academy was not kept continuously. Particularly in times of political upheaval, documents were arbitrarily and deliberately destroyed and carelessly handled. The documents from the period between 1933 and 1945 are particularly fragmentary, so numerous secondary sources must be used to reconstruct the events. Research in the archives and library of the HGB, the state archives in Leipzig and Dresden, the digital collection of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York and a review of current thematic literature form the basis for the material in the exhibition. Excerpts and reproductions from documents, archive holdings and journals will provide an insight into this chapter of the institution's history in chronological order.

Important information can also be gleaned from biographical accounts of former teachers at the university: The illustrator Hugo Steiner-Prag, artistic director of the Propyläen publishing house, president of the International Book Exhibition (1919-1927) had held a professorship at the academy since 1910. He was immediately dismissed in 1933 due to his Jewish origins. The painter and graphic artist Willi Geiger also lost his teaching position at the university in 1933. In 1934, the Dresden ministry appointed Walter Gasch, an active NSDAP member, as deputy director. In 1937, Hans-Alexander Müller, teacher of the woodcut class, and the graphic artist and illustrator Dr Hellmuth Weissenborn were forced to leave the academy. Both were married to Jewish women. An important source for the period between 1940 and 1944 is the magazine ‘Wächterstraße 11’, published by the Nazi Students' Association, which contains letters from soldiers and reports from everyday life at the academy. The only new foundation at that time was the Institute for Colour Photography in 1940, whose director was involved with female students in the recording of monuments as part of the ‘Führerauftrag Monumentalmalerei’. With the current state of knowledge, it is not possible to provide a complete account of the events, but the exhibition will highlight gaps. The exhibition also presents projects and publications from the university that have recently dealt with National Socialism and its effects. The presentation aims to invite further joint research.

The film essay ‘Dürer's Heirs’ by Lutz Dammbeck from 1996 forms a bridge to the early GDR period and the connection between art and ideology in the exhibition on the upper floor of the hgb gallery.

In autumn 2025, HGB Magazine #3 will be published as a result of the HGB seminar on right-wing continuities from 2021 to 2023. The seminar was organised by Julia Blume, Nanne Buurman and Julia Kurz, who also formed the editorial team for this themed magazine.

A DESIGN CAMPUS Lab as part of the exhibition Craft as Myth. Between Ideal and Everyday Life

Silk production is one of the world’s oldest cultural techniques, with many myths surrounding its history and origins in China. Long, fine and extremely durable threads are obtained from the cocoons of silkworms by carefully unwinding them. The resulting textiles are the result of thousands of years of craftsmanship and design. At the same time, silk is an example of complex global exchange processes: Textiles and their patterns are material carriers of a cultural transfers. Their production and distribution is closely linked to global trade routes, as a result of which both silkworms and mulberry trees were distributed across the continents by humans. The exploitation of the natural raw material illustrates the subjugation and utilization of nature for human needs. The so-called “silk road” is a symbol for early global trade, often accompanied by colonization and exploitation.

The audio-visual installation examines silk as a global cultural phenomenon and as a product of a close relationship between humans and animals. In an interplay of artistic, creative and documentary perspectives, it questions human-centred perspectives and colonial narratives. The act of listening opens up space for holistic perspectives and polyphonic narratives that reveal the multi-layered relationships and dependencies between animals, humans, the environment, politics and production.

What is Russian? What is behind this unrepresentative generalisation that equates and erases almost 200 official national and ethnic identities of the Russian Federation? What does „Strangers Identity“ mean and why is it important right now to talk post-Soviet and decolonial about the still imperial Russia?

Five panellists with experience of life in Russia and mixed national identity talk about their experiences of life in Russia and in emigration. What does their apolar identity, woven from multiple contexts, mean to each of them, and why is the concept of the nation-state misleading?

At the end of the event, the panellists will discuss with the moderator and the guests what decoloniality means to them in the context of imperial Russia and how they work with debunking the dangerous stereotype that everything that comes from Russia is automatically Russian.

Alexandra Velichko (she/her) is an artist, photographer and graphic designer from Russia with a focus on contemporary photography. She currently lives in Halle, Germany, and studies photography and media at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.

Anastasiia Yakhtantsidi (she/her) is an artist who works with beeswax, memory, forests and archives and currently lives in Leipzig. Her work revolves around the memory of places and the development of an artistic approach to natural historiography.

Anna Rotaenko (she/her) is an artist born in 1990 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. She lived in the Russian Federation and studied at the Rodchenko School and in the workshop of Sergei Bratkov (Ukraine), among others. In her work, she deals with social issues and the expanded concept of documentary film. Rotaenko's projects are mostly text-based and take the form of installations - including interactive formats - as well as videos. Her focus is on the interface between digital and physical spaces, developing multimodal narratives that explore the entanglements of human and non-human experience as a result of extractivist politics.

Lesya Kuranova (she/her) is an interdisciplinary designer from Moscow, Russia. She lives in Halle and studies at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. In her practice she uses graphic design as a tool for writing and designing.

Yura Yurkin (no pronouns) is a writer and decolonial activist based in Essen, Germany. He works on projects related to the identity of the Komi-Permyak people, who historically live in the north-east of the European part of Russia and to whom he himself belongs. In the past, he has worked in various Russian museums and cultural projects.

Moderation: Daria Makarova (HGB)

Daria Makarova (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher from Russia. She has been living in Germany since 2022 and studies media art in the Expanded Cinema class at the HGB Leipzig. She has also been a Fridrich Ebert Foundation fellow since 2023. Her practice focuses on the recontextualisation of historical narratives and patriarchal power structures, which she transforms into poetics with a subversive effect. Central themes of her work are the exploration of language forms, state violence and the attempt as a utopian act.

Interactive In-Game Online Lecture Performance 

Los Santos, the digital world of popular action game Grand Theft Auto V, isn’t just inspired by Los Angeles in terms of its cityscape. Like its real world counterpart, it’s also one of the most popular film sets in history: No other game has hosted as many machinimas - films recorded in video games - and game art projects.

Together with the audience, Total Refusal goes on an art walk - or rather drive - through the digital metropolis, touring the city spots which were used as film sets and performance locations. They shine a light on the practice of appropriating contemporary video games for artistic purposes and discuss the potential of art in deconstructing the mechanisms of hyperrealist media.

My mother told me once when i was a kid:
“Never talk about people who are not there. It is a gossip.”

Hiwa K graduated from High School in Iraq and continued his self-education meeting different intellectuals, visual artists, musicians and theatre artists. The major fields of these informal and non-systematic studies were European literature and philosophy, learnt from available books translated into Arabic. After moving to Germany at the age of 25, he studied music; specifically he was a pupil of the Flamenco master Paco Peña. Hiwa K’s works, escape normative aesthetics but give a possibility of another vibration to vernacular forms, oral histories (Chicago boys, 2011), modes of encounter (Cooking with Mama, 2006) and political situations (This lemon tastes of apple, 2011). The repository of his references consists of stories told by family members and friends, found situations as well as everyday forms that are the products of pragmatics and necessity. His own education leaves a strong impression within his works, which are the result of a continuous critique of the art education system and the professionalization of art practice, as well as the myth of the individual artist.

Consequently, many of his works are characterized by a strong collective and participatory dimension, and have to do with the process of the teaching and learning systems and an insistence on the concept of obtaining knowledge from everyday experience rather than doctrine Hiwa K was involved in various collective exhibitions such as La Triennale in Paris and the “Edgware Road Project” at the Serpentine Gallery in London. His Chicago Boys While We Were Singing They Were Dreaming project is continuously hosted by important international institutions, such as Alternativa Festival in Gdansk,the CASCO in Utrecht, the Serpentine Gallery in London, New Museum/ NYC, MACRO/Rome, MuHKA and MUSAC in León. Today, the term video art encompasses a variety of time-based audiovisual forms of expression, including screen-based single-channel videos, expansive multi-channel video installations, as well as expanded cinema and digital net art. This diversity is also reflected in the exhibition Screen Time. Leipzig video art since 1990.

Since the late 1960s, video art has gradually established itself internationally as an independent form of visual art. The medium also has a tradition in the GDR and especially in Leipzig, with roots dating back to the 1970s. At the latest since the establishment of the Media Art programme at the Academy of Visual Arts (HGB) in 1993, the city has been able to establish itself as an important location for audiovisual art production. From this point onwards, exhibitions and festivals were organised on a regular basis. In particular, the Media Biennale organised in 1992 and 1994 offered an important opportunity for international networking. Since moving into its new building in 2004, the MdbK itself can point to several relevant exhibitions (including 40jahrevideokunst.de. - Revision.ddr 2006) and a steadily growing audiovisual collection.

The technical framework conditions of video art have changed just as rapidly as the status of digital moving images in our everyday culture. The exhibition traces this development using selected positions from Leipzig and at the same time offers a concentrated history of the technical and artistic development of three decades of video art.

The exhibition projects of the Kommunale Galerie Nord are realised as a cooperative management model between the Kunstverein Tiergarten e.V. and the Department of Art, Culture and History in the Mitte district office. With the kind support of the district development fund of the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion.

Making art, storing art, exhibiting art and viewing art are always also administrative acts. The often precarious life and work administration of freelance artists and curators includes the acquisition of funding and project documentation, the maintenance of collections and personnel support, visitor "management" and the maintenance of technical exhibition infrastructure. The exhibition series Artministration by the Office for Curatorial Research explores the fields of work of artists and curators with a view to private, professional and public administrative practices and processes as well as the associated forms of knowledge.

To kick off the Artministration series, visitors are invited to the new spaces of the Office for Curatorial Research to submit thematic proposals for an Open Call exhibition. Following the publication of the Open Call, the artistic applications received will be juried in a participatory process together with the visitors and finally presented as part of an exhibition in the Office for Curatorial Research. The office team will offer curatorial advice during office hours.

The results of the exhibition further broaden the thematic range of administrative acts in the field of art and culture and set priorities for the upcoming editions of the series Artministration in other administrative architectures.

The Snail Eye Comic Festival is an annual event in Kolonadenstraße that brings together comic lovers and artists. Young art students from the HGB are also represented.

In addition to a lively comic market, visitors can expect exhibitions in shop windows and shops, comic readings, talks, lectures, workshops and animated film screenings. The focus is on networking and exchange between professional comic creators, comic fans and art enthusiasts. The festival offers a varied stage programme with open-air readings and moderated talks as well as walk-in exhibitions that involve the local business community. On Wednesday, 18 June 2025, the annual exhibition of the Evening Academy will open in the Festsaal of the HGB. The HGB's Evening Academy offers courses in fine arts, applied and artistic photography and design every semester.

The opening will be accompanied by a collective sound performance at 20:30 in the atrium.

Master students from the university will be available to the participants as professional course instructors. In the joint summer exhibition in the HGB ballroom, the individual courses will show their results and open up for dialogue. Everyone is cordially invited!

The third edition of Aurora Digitalis explores border-crossings between digital and physical worlds and realities. At its core are questions of identity, technological saturation, and the shifting structures of social order. Through speculative scenarios, digital fictions, and mythological reinterpretations, the presented works examine how concepts of subjectivity, the body, and power are transformed in the digital age – and invite us to renegotiate the boundaries of what can be thought and represented.

Aurora Digitalis is a screening format dedicated to time-based digital films that create alternative worlds with game engines, among other tools, and renegotiate these worlds in their identities, virtual bodies and socio-economic structures. Through speculative narrative forms, the understanding of game mechanics and avatars, they question the ideological foundations of digital technologies and open up critical perspectives on power structures and future concepts. The screening includes films from international positions as well as HGB alumni.

Mouth Archives project focuses on how the lives of communities are performed in recipes, anecdotes, jokes, songs, and rhythms. Tenuous and joyful, such living archives are the essence of the project, which will consist of a series of culinary interventions, sound performances, and storytelling evenings, highlighting and bringing together forms of resistance, resilience, togetherness, tenderness, and care in which the mouth is a focal point. It launches with the sound and food performance by Sōydivision, a collaborative platform and artist collective shaped by the lived experiences of the diaspora. Initially composed predominantly of Indonesian diaspora artists in Berlin, its constellation has since expanded to include diasporic artists of the global majority (an emerging, decolonial term that recognizes the lived realities of Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities who represent the majority of the world’s population) mostly based in Germany.

Rooted in the complexities of displacement, identity, and cultural hybridity, Sōydivision operates at the intersection of art and activism. 

The performance is part of the project Mund zu Mund | Mouth Archives, curated by Clarissa Aidar, Milena Gehrt and Anastasia Shestak in cooperation with Cinémathèque Leipzig.

The Sandwich as a Medium of Cultural Encounter: A project that transforms the diverse possibilities between two slices of bread into a space for exchange and creative reflection.On May 25, 2025, a special happening will take place in Chemnitz.

Artists Marie Donike and Johannes Specks will prepare sandwich recipes derived from a wide range of individual experiences and culinary contexts. These sandwiches—each connected to its own story—serve as a starting point for conversations and encounters. What is usually a quick bite becomes a collective experience in which biographies and taste preferences intersect and complement one another.The sandwiches presented are based on recipes, ingredients, and stories submitted by the public in response to an open call. The diversity of the recipes reveals how differently a seemingly everyday dish can be interpreted. Each sandwich reflects familial traditions, cultural influences, and personal memories.The entire process—from collecting recipes to the performative preparation and communal consumption—will be documented and archived using various media.

On June 27, 2025, a reenactment will be presented at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. There, a new perspective will be offered on the sandwich as an artistic and social phenomenon that transcends boundaries and becomes a symbol of transcultural cuisine.

The project Choreographies of Unsettlement examines frictions between spaces and times. The exhibition, accompanied by the publication, addresses time as an in-between space as well as temporalities of distances and proximities. 

One of the starting points for the development of this project was Madina Tlostanova's concept of unsettlement, which she describes in her book “Narratives of Unsettlement: Being out-of-joint as a generative human condition”, published in 2023. She defines unsettlement as “a condition characterized by a constant negotiation between belonging and not belonging, rootedness and displacement, a chronophobic fear of change”. 

Four artists focus on temporalities that elude them: in the cyclic movement of the sun (Aischa Gianna Müller), in the memory traces of the Sahara plants (Abdessamad El Montassir), in buried relics of riverbeds in the Kunlun Mountains (Yujia Liu), and in vanished mountains of limestone in Tatarstan (Gulshat Gubaidullina). 

These chronotopes, full of their own historical prejudices, unfold different stories and choreographies of the unsettlement of time and space. The project addresses not only the retrieval of landscapes and of collective memory, but also how these landscapes survive by embedding the various narratives surrounding them.

The project is funded by the Cultural Office of the City of Leipzig and is being carried out as a final project of the Master's program Cultures of the Curatorial at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig.

CLASHES is a collection of manuals and tools from cultural producers who confront artistic and social practices.

The contributors come from different parts of the world and work with artistic means such as performance, theatre, film, textile design or architecture. They all foster spaces of social togetherness in which autonomous aesthetics emerge. As an open access publication, CLASHES functions as a platform. It gathers strategies, exercises and games and asks how practitioners deal with the clash of people, forms and positions in their work.

How can cultural practice become public when financial resources disappear and institutional frameworks start to erode? How can artistic and curatorial practices claim space and sustain their agency? How can publics not only be demanded but actively created - as an act, a gesture, a temporary structure? What forms of showing, listening, presence, and action remain possible beyond established spaces and temporalities?

no solid ground is a testing ground as intervention, a temporarily marked site in the urban space of Berlin that disrupts habitual uses and explores artistic spaces of action. It is an invitation to states of in-between, to a productive engagement with the uncertain, the invisible, the unpaid - the uncertain future of art and culture.

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, several artistic positions will become public for a moment throughout the day.

Kunsthalle der HGB is a project that transforms the office in room 4.5 into a temporary exhibition space. In the coming months, solo exhibitions by students will be shown here regularly.

The HGB invites you to the Diploma Tour, which shows the final projects of this year's graduates. Visitors can look forward to exhibitions throughout the Academy building. Works by around 80 graduates in painting/graphics, photography, book art/graphic design and media art will be on display in around 20 exhibition rooms, organised by the graduates together with Ilse Lafer (Head of the HGB Gallery).

On the opening day, the HGB will once again celebrate its traditional summer party, which this year will be organised by media art students.

As part of the graduation ceremony on 11 July at the HGB Leipzig, Stephan Zerbe and Ulf Jung from the board of the Rössing Foundation will award the Rössing Prize for Photography 2025.

The Rössing Prize is awarded every two years by the Rössing Foundation among the graduates of the Photography programme at the HGB and is endowed with three prizes of € 1,000.
