In this intensive on-site workshop, we will explore the relationship between the body, the unamplified voice, and both the architectural and natural environments. The focus is on how, through attentive listening and physical experience, we can engage with and respond to our immediate surroundings. The voice becomes an instrument for perceiving spatial qualities, exploring resonances and experiencing new relationships between the body, architecture and landscape. How does the sound of a place change depending on where I sing and where I listen? How can we engage with our immediate surroundings through voice, movement and presence?
Inspired by the work of composer Pauline Oliveros, as well as somatic movement exercises from Qi Gong and an approach to the classical North Indian Dhrupad vocal tradition, we shift our explorations outdoors and develop performative interventions in public spaces, cultivating a form of collective perception in which individual experiences and reactions to the environment intertwine. The workshop culminates in a joint public evening performance that emerges from this process.
