In her first solo exhibition Above the Fold at Galerie Mathias Güntner, Franziska Reinbothe presents new paintings.

Within painting Franziska Reinbothe deals with what usually remains hidden: the back of a painting and its edges. To make both visible, she reshapes her paintings: the canvas is compressed, perforated, folded or turned from front to back. The stretcher frame is exposed, broken, or even completely removed. Franziska Reinbothe's initial question is always: What actually happens when...? Her driving artistic force is not iconoclasm - but curiosity.

Sara Lily Perez, contemporary gallerist, Berlin

Sara Lily curates exhibitions that initiate dialogues about social and ecological issues in her young contemporary art gallery at Bikini-Haus in Berlin, founded in 2021. From the beginning, questions about identity, trans identity, and body images have been central to her program. Time and again, she also gives exhibition opportunities to young refugee artists* from Ukraine. 

Born in 1991, the gallery owner came to Berlin from New York City in 2018. The rapid change and short duration of her exhibitions are due to her desire to give a platform and visibility to as many artists* as possible and to reach a large audience. 

What is her conclusion after almost two years? What economic necessities does she face and how is the collaboration with the artists going? How does she select her artists and what is the duration of the collaboration? What are the considerations behind her selection and exhibition planning?

Why is Bikini Haus - known in Berlin as a young, urban location primarily for design and food - the right choice for her gallery? What are the differences between the US and Germany in terms of economic conditions and the art market? What is their strategy for the coming years and to what extent does politics influence the program? 

There are many questions - you are invited to ask Sara Lily Perez your own questions and learn more about the self-image of a young gallery owner.

This lecture belongs to the series Art as a Profession - Professions in Art. (Cornelia Renz, Julia Brodauf) On the coming Wednesday afternoons we will continue to follow the trail in conversations with other players who sometimes even seem like opponents to us artists: gallery owners, curators, museum directors, journalists * inside, critics *, but also political institutions.

The exhibition project Plural Perspectives aims to highlight contemporary dynamics and a diversity of perspectives on buildings and places that carry within them a symbolic meaning for the city of Berlin. Curated by Dereck Marouço Sant'Anna da Silva, the project combines public space with artistic practices that initiate new dialogues with monuments, buildings or institutions in order to reflect and interrogate (historical) narratives sustained by the state and capital. Five artistic positions were invited to create new works in relation to five sites in the city. Between June 10 and 25, the resulting works will be presented in a group exhibition at soft power - itself located at one of these sites, the former Sarotti factory in Tempelhof.

Every living being comes with cell membranes. The membrane represents a common feature of unicellular organisms, plants, and human and non-human animals. Can the concept of the membrane therefore help us overcome anthropocentric thinking? And if so, how does it allow to address hierarchies and power imbalances among humans? Can it mobilize decolonial critiques of a posthumanist discourse as a model to thinking in gender studies and feminist science and technology studies? Will a queer understanding of desire or a Black feminist understanding of eroticism help us to draw new, unexpected connections between these relationships and environments? Regarding the materiality of membranes, we are confronted with questions of sustainability, not only in artistic practice, but in everyday life, too. In dealing with clothing, packaging, and all other envelopes (cars, airplane cabins) whose porosity in the sense of their evaporation or microplastic contamination is constitutive for climate change, the membrane is present.

Taking these topics and questions as a starting point, the conference explores the potential of the membrane as a concept-metaphor or model in scholarly and artistic investigations, It opens up intersectional and transdisciplinary approaches, pursues them in an experimental way, and invites discussions – within the Gender Studies Association, the civic public of Leipzig, Halle, and internationally. Urgent questions about decolonizing Gender Studies will be raised. Addressing power inequalities and structural domination, as they are taking hold also at universities and art academies, the conference will be supported by an awareness team as well as translations (Engl.-German) and German Sign Language Interpreting (DGS).

membra(I)nes is the first Gender Studies Association’s conference taking place at art institutions and in Eastern Germany. It will work upon borders, in between cities, political systems, and academic norms. A Round Table on the East/West divide will close the conference. Performances, workshops, art exhibitions, radio, and a concert provide a public program that surrounds and and pervades the conference and includes impacts the cities and regions.

There is no such Thing as Health

We are all inhabitants of the "kingdom of the sick" that Susan Sontag describes in Illness as Metaphor. We all have been, are or will be sick at some point. Health is a fiction – in capitalism, it is a metaphor for being fit for work. The imperative to heal determines society's perspective on our bodies, and it leaves no room for the chronically ill, the incurable and the disabled. And, when illness occurs, we are forced to mourn another fiction: our independence. Instead of holding on to the idea of health, we ought to ask: What does it mean to live with pain, trauma and grief? To deal with depression, to move outside of normative notions of temporality, in crip time? And what vocabulary, what language can we create to share these experiences with each other?
As part of There is no such Thing as Health, artists with and without psychiatric experience show their works in the gallery of the Durchblick association Leipzig. The title alludes to a quote by former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who claimed that "There is no such thing as society" – and thus justified her neoliberal policy of privatization and cuts in social services. The exhibition reverses this thesis: Based on the idea of illness as a social issue, it asks to let go of the ideal of health, in order to turn instead to the diverse lived realities of trauma, illness, and disability.
In their work the artists deal with experiences that are in conflict with the socially prevailing expectations of performance. In doing so, they address serious issues such as pain, suicide, and discrimination. But through their own visual, material and acoustic languages, they also imagine utopias for a different way of living together.
Durchblick e.V. in Leipzig is a self-help initiative for and by people with psychiatric experience. The association has its roots in the citizens' movement of the GDR and arose from a critique of psychiatry as an institution. Durchblick e.V. is an advocate for those affected by psychiatry towards politics and has been advocating for alternative models for over 30 years. The initiative supports those affected through a variety of counseling services, activities, meals and housing. Part of the offer are the art group and the artistic workshops in the house. Exhibitions are held regularly in the durch blick galerie.

Any accumulation of documents can become three-dimensional through cinematic engagement, a place, a house. The films look beyond the emotional significance of named archives and ask how such places can be organized, not least to give access to others.
