In the tip of the tongue is the phenomenon of momentarily failing to recall something, despite the sensation of knowing it. That this memory is sitting on the tip of our tongues, about to be spit.
The exhibition and public program look at how narratives can be passed on with our bodies. Through food, sound, the activation of the senses and the voice, artists evoke what often remains in the shadows of official records, “what we are trained to believe we don't remember” and “socialized not to recognize as valuable”. Which traces of time can we taste, smell, or sing?
Elia Nurvista and Åsa Sonjasdotter unfold stories in which food discourse collides with the violence embedded in the production, circulation and consumption of natural resources. Alongside them, Onyeka Igwe draws us closer to colonial remnants and the forces they might hold. Dina Mimi intertwines different archival sources together to delve into the conditions of resistance and liberation. Raga Rahman engages with emotions connected to eating habits and the cultural and societal prejudices they provoke.
In the public program, artists Yasmeen Al-Qaisi, Mareike Hornof & Ann-Kathrin Ntokalou invite the audience to find resilient ways of preserving and sharing memories, appealing to time, hope, and protection. Participatory formats create spaces in which memory is negotiated as a communal and caring process.
Mouth Archives is a curatorial project by Clarissa Aidar, Anastasia Shestak and Milena Gehrt that started as a final project in the HGB master's programme Cultures of the Curatorial. The program works with transient and embodied archives; forms of knowledge that resist formal systematization, holding traces of social histories and personal paths, and the challenges of coming together and being multiple. It is a nomadic program that seeks to inhabit a range of spaces: a cinema, a church, a bar, a theatre, and a community center, across Leipzig and beyond.
