Tactics of visually powerful forms of protest that have characterised social movements, especially since the 1960s, are reminiscent of the activist visual politics of the suffragettes, who fought for women's suffrage at the beginning of the 20th century. Visual activism, theatrical, carnivalesque processions and iconoclasm were already being used back then. Visual campaigns and processions were not least evidence of different ambitions, conflicts and contradictions, which were also linked to earlier historical and potential social upheavals. The lecture is dedicated to the interpretation of the image cultures of the suffragettes in order to sharpen their potential for a critical historical understanding of social movements and upheavals, their course and their failure.
