Hybris at Futurium Berlin and Artist House Schloss Balmoral: Sustainable building material by Yana Zschiedrich

Yana Zschiedrich
Since 2019, Yana Zschiedrich has been dedicated to researching "Hybris", an art-based initiative that presents an innovative method of transforming waste into building materials. The project was also part of her diploma thesis at the HGB. Yana Zschiedrich is currently a master student of Prof. Joachim Blank.

As part of the theme year "Treasures of the Future", the Futurium in Berlin will be presenting two objects that Zschiedrich created for the Thinking Space Nature/Raw Materials from May. Yana Zschiedrich has also been selected as a fellow of the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral for the year 2024. During her six-month scholarship, she will continue to devote herself to her artistic research initiative.

The main goal of the "Hybris" initiative is to use mealworms to convert expanded polystyrene into biodegradable materials that can serve as a substitute for sand in sustainable building materials. In the period from 2022 to 2023, Zschiedrich worked with Fraunhofer IBP to lay the foundations for the novel building material GEOBRIS, which she developed based on the analyses and tests carried out by IBP.
