This lecture focuses on a chapter of the university’s history that has received little attention to date. In the space of just a few years, the internationally renowned academy was reduced to an institution of little significance. Influential academics such as Hugo Steiner-Prag and Hans Alexander Müller were expelled, Jewish students were marginalised, and former students – who had enriched Leipzig’s cultural and artistic life – were persecuted and murdered. The magazine Wächterstraße 11, published by the National Socialist Students’ Union, became a reflection of the prevailing ideology and a record of everyday life at the university. In this lecture, quotations, visual examples and biographical insights will supplement the fragmentary records in the archives and place them in the context of the cultural policy of the city of Leipzig at that time.

JULIA BLUME taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig, until 2025; she also headed the Institute for Book Art and the HGB Archive there.
