Markus graduated from the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. Together with Anne König and Jan Wenzel he founded the collaborative project Spector in 2000 and Markus was co-editor of its magazine outlet, Spector cut+paste. The publishing house Spector Books was founded in 2008. What is Spector? It can be an office, a magazine, a publishing house, a collaboration, or even a temporary venue in Leipzig. Even so, work on editorial projects in the field of contemporary fine art is still at the core of Spector. In 2004 Markus was admitted to the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). Since 2006 he has been senior lecturer for first and second year graphic design at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts. The Studio’s work includes book designs for contemporary artists. Clients include, among others, the Leipzig Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Theaters Stuttgart, Markus has received numerous national and international awards for his design work, such as the Golden Letter in the competition for Best Book Design From All Over The World in 2004. In 2007 he was selected to design the visual identity of the Kiel Week, the world's largest sailing regatta. In 2013 he was awarded the Ladislav Sutnar Prize by the the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň.
Markus Dreßen lives and works in Leipzig.

Independent Publishing Fair „It’s a book, ...“ held at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts
We are pleased to offer a unique two-year postgraduate programme [Meisterschüler*innenstudium] at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts (HGB), focusing on the conceptualisation, organisation, design, and execution of the Independent Publishing Fair: It’s a Book…, an one day event held on Saturday during the Leipzig Book Fair in every March. This programme offers postgraduate students an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the design and curation of this prominent fair, which showcases independent publishers, zines, and innovative publication platforms.
Under the guidance of Prof. Markus Dreßen, designer and publisher with, and co-founder of the publishing house Spector Books, and Dr. Sabine Schmid, art historian and curator at Villa Stuck, Munich, students will engage in all stages of creating, curating and organising the fair, including visual identity, curation of symposium, and public relations. This will include the design of key elements such as:
– Claim/Title of the fair: Crafting a compelling slogan or title that encapsulates the essence of the fair.
– Key Visual: Designing the central graphic motif that will represent the fair.
– Poster: Creating promotional materials for the event.
– Accompanying Publication: Producing a publication to complement the event and provide context.
– Website: Developing the online presence of the fair, ensuring accessibility and engagement.
– Social Media Communication: Strategizing and managing the fair’s digital marketing and outreach across platforms.
– Spatial Design: Conceptualising and designing the layout of the fair space.
– Banners: Designing physical banners and signage for the event.
– Fundraising: Get insights in how to organise fundraising to finance such an event.
Program Highlights
– Gain hands-on experience in the field of independent publishing.
– Collaborate with experts in the field of publishing, curators, designers and artists in a dynamic, creative academic environment.
– Contribute to the design and set up of a renowned cultural event in the heart of Leipzig.
– Develop a professional portfolio with projects that will be showcased to a wider audience.
Who should apply?
This program is ideal for individuals with a background in graphic design, visual communication, fine arts, curating, or event management. Applicants should be passionate about independent publishing, creative event design, and the intersection of art, culture, and communication. We invite you to become part of a team, developing a grassroots project, started with the publishing house Spector Books, and contribute to the growth of one of the most exciting platforms for independent publishers in Europe.
