POPULÄR SEIN Symposium with Diedrich Diederichsen, Katrin Gottschalk, Christian Falsnaes, Jürgen Link, Kerstin Stakemeie
What demands does POPULÄR SEIN (being popular) bring with it today and what is POPULÄR? What forms of addressing an imagined large mass can be found in politics and art that are focused on POPULARITY? In the present time, a series of concepts are again the subject of intense political debates relating to the understanding of what "the people" is: populism, democracy, culture, religion, and identity. The Symposium POPULÄR SEIN (being popular) at the HGB Leipzig is dedicated in lectures and discussions to the observed entanglements of cultural, economic and social dimensions of contemporary identity offers and identity requirements. Against the background of contemporary populist currents, conceptions of the people, the elite, the class and the culture can be discerned, which are used in different ways in identity politics. Artistic practices and political rhetorics define fields that can be used to discuss representational relationships that are symptomatic of current forms of POPULAR DEVELOPMENT. Who speaks about whom and with whom?
