https://soundcloud.com/soundartlabThe first German radio test was broadcast from Königs Wusterhausen (southeast of Berlin) on 22. December 1920, three years before public radio broadcasting started. A perfect occasion to think about “100 Years of Radio”. The radio as a medium stands for sending from one location to many recipients, and for intense contact with the public. Long before the mobile telephony of today, the radio opened up an acoustic space of simultaneousness and independence from location: Anybody out there?
The participatory emission and exhibition project is dedicated to the transformations and potentials of immaterial sending and receiving: Which acoustic and social space does the radio open up? Which types of community or union does the radio allow – in the apparatus itself, in front of it? Where and when does (listening to) the radio take place? Who uses it for what purpose and why? Which contemporary and future forms of the radio can we expect?
This project consists of multiple parts and happenings. There will be a live radio programme broadcast from D21, a Klangkunst (sound art) show on Deutschlandfunk Kultur, a live performance based on this show format, a public intervention of GERÄUSCHKULISSE on Lindenauer Markt and an exhibition which can be experienced through the shop windows of D21 Kunstraum (possible opening hours in December will be published online).
Due to the Coronavirus-related closings, D21 Kunstraum transforms into a source and listening room to broadcast the polyphonic radio programme of sound artists, radio collectives and students of Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig (inter alia on the local FM frequencies of Radio Blau and Radio Corax, on the stations of the international radio art network radia.fm and via an online stream).
Frederike Mohrmann and Ralf Wendt curated the live radio programme which will be broadcast from D21. The programme is of experimental, testing and lab character, dealing with the possibilities of the radio as a medium of the here and now and allows to question it radically: Our concept of a radio voice and of radio language, of information, entertainment, access and participation, of programming and of time, of truth and of listening. And why is there a host all the time? (with contributions from Anna Bromley, Tina Klatte, Alexander Körner, Felix Kubin, Claire Serres, Ralf Wendt, Matteo Spanó, Jasmina Al-Qaisi, Masha Karupsha, Abir Tawakalna as well as the collectives Radio Cashmere/DIY Church, Liquid Penguin Ensemble).
D21 Kunstraum will become a space of communication during the live broadcasting: The ongoing process can be watched through the windows like on a stage. The Klangkunst (“sound art”) show “One to Many” on Deutschlandfunk Kultur, premiering on 18. December from 00:05, is a separate presentation. “One to Many” is an artistic reenactment of the “first German radio broadcast” from 1920, not recorded at the time. With the means of the sound of art or Klangkunst, both sides get a chance to speak: those who broadcast and those who receive. “One to Many” can already be streamed online as a ’preview’.
Schaubühne Lindenfels will be one of the locations broadcasting the Klangkunst show “One to Many”. The date has been set to 22. December 2020, exactly one hundred years after the historic date of 1920, accompanied by a choir like “back in the days” and with a newly told story of the “first show”.
Regionally specific features will be dedicated to the first and only pirate channel of Leipzig in GDR times (the channel Freies Paunsdorf, circa 1964 — 1974), and the city station founded by the Soviet military administration which had been keeping the population up to date with official statements broadcast from Leipzig’s city hall by the help of loudspeakers within the city limits from 1945. The system was finally put out of service in 1998.
The public is invited to participate in an intervention in public space by the Leipzig based collective GERÄUSCHKULISSE. Over the course of this exhibition (Fri — Sun vom 15:00 — 19:00), an oversized model of a radio can be found on Lindenauer Markt. The object “Radio Activity” broadcasts a live radio programme. Passers-by may interact with the “chunky radio receiver” by their movements and will be interviewed about their individual experience with the radio. Excerpts of this radiophone game will be broadcast back to the D21 channel.
