Jia-chae Chang's short film Offline Messages is part of the programme nowhere close to halfway at the Images Festival 2025 in Toronto. It has its North American premiere.

Offline Messages explores identity and nostalgia through literature and film. The film tells the story of Weng Nao, Jin Lian and Qiu Miaojin from the author's same hometown, Changhua City, Taiwan, and connects their home across generations with cycles of colonialism, writers and filmmaking.

Jia-chae Chang was born in 1989 in Changhua, Taiwan. He is currently studying at the HGB Leipzig in the Expanded Cinema class of Prof. Clemens von Wedemeyer and Mareike Bernien. His video works interpret the mediated relationship between technological objects and physical perception through private narratives. His most recent artistic practice explores how changes in media and standardisation systems influence the writing behaviour of Chinese characters and their social meaning. Through
research, image collage and re-narration, reality and imagination merge.

Images Festival is a non-profit, artist-run festival dedicated to experimental film, media art, contemporary art and the spaces in which these forms coexist. The festival's programme questions the conditions of contemporary moving image culture and offers artists, filmmakers, curators and other practitioners a platform to work experimentally in form and content.
