The photography and media class of Prof. Ines Schaber and Susanne Keichel invites the visual artist Kaucyila Brooke from Los Angeles. She has been teaching in the Photography and Media program at the California Institute of the Arts since 1992. In her artistic work, Brooke uses various narrative and serial formats - including large-format photomontages, photo novellas and photo archives - re-evaluating the status of photography as an object. Many of her projects are based on archival research and the consideration and recoding of photographic genres such as portraiture, still life, reportage and landscape. On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Kaucyila Brooke will present her work "The Boy Mechanic" at the HGB. The work is an ongoing project that documents the history of lesbian bars in various cities in the United States and Europe. The loss of architecture and the weakness of public memory have often been the motivation for the photographic documentation of changing urban spaces. The focus on the lesbian bar shows how sexuality and sexual identity influence larger narratives about public identity and social space.
