The relics of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds are probably among the largest surviving and historically relevant examples of National Socialist architecture. They are a manifestation of ideology - the fascist megalomania, the Führer principle and the national community imperative can still be seen today. At the same time, since the post-war period, the site has been an example of a social negotiation process with the material and symbolic legacy of National Socialism, which each generation has to fight out anew. Oscillating between repression, utilization and reappraisal, Nuremberg's contradictory treatment of the site of the perpetrators serves as a seismograph for Germany's relationship to its own past.
