Exhibition along the façade of the HGB Leipzig: July 16th to 25th, 2021
The project “A Question(ing) of Gesture” by Tina Bara and Alba D’Urbano was one of the first interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary projects that came out of the HGB Leipzig. It dealt with the notion of the performative in contemporary art and belongs to a series of large projects conceived by the two professors, alongside “Bellissima”, "Viaggio in Italia" and "Introspection".
Now, Alba D’Urbano bids her farewell; as a gesture of departure directed towards the future, she invited artist Bettina Hutschek to develop a new project with the students. The archive of Bara and D’Urbano’s collaborative teaching serves as the basis for new artistic reflections. The focus is on themes which repeatedly impacted their projects: the human body with its inscriptions and presentations in various media, biographical experiences, the impression left by places and historical events, the balance between intimate and public actions in artistic practices as well as feminist perspectives.
The current project culminates in a collective performance: In a cross between a demonstration, parade and procession, both new and archival images move through Leipzig’s city centre. This mobile exhibition is supplemented by reenactments and performative work by guest artists and students. The image procession ends at the academy building and turns into a final performative gesture: the images are now hung from the windows, thus transforming the mobile exhibition into a static mosaic of pictures.
