With their multi-channel video installation "re:miserere! (8:45 mins, 2025/2026), the artist duo Mailand / Innenhof (*1988 / *1989) bring the aria "Miserere" from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera "Il trovatore" into our time in a unique way. To this end, they have broken the piece down into five components: the orchestra, the conductor, the choir, the soprano solo and the tenor solo. These five parts were performed unannounced in various public spaces in the form of artistic interventions: in the packed waiting area of a jobcentre branch, the soprano suddenly begins to sing. The four-piece orchestra plays in a supermarket next to the bottle return machine, whilst the conductor directs the visitors to a public library and the choir interrupts a church concert to sing before the congregation. Finally, the tenor performs his aria to the surprise of the animals in the middle of a pigsty.

Through the simultaneous projection of film footage from the five interventions, the aria is subsequently reassembled in the exhibition space, whereby the sublimity of the music creates a peculiar tension with the social reality of the performance venues.

Art historian Michal B. Ron is an experienced host of Marcel Broodthaers Memorial Birthday Parties, which take place every January 28 and sometimes also halfway, July 28, when another Marcel (Duchamp) has his (full) birthday. A few of these yearly M.B. Memorial Birthday Parties have been celebrated together with An Paenhuysen, and for the Department of Filliousophy, Michal and An share their party expertise to create a Birthday of Art at la fête permanente of the Biennale on October 17, one of the key dates in Filliou’s Whispered History of Art on the origin of art. 2026 marks the 100th birthday of Robert Filliou (17.1.1926 – 2.12.1987) and the 1 000 063 Birthday of Art. How to celebrate art? We will do so at la fête permanente on October 17, one of the key dates in Filliou’s Whispered History of Art. “A propos de fête,” wrote Marianne Filliou concerning the annual anniversary party, “Robert’s proposal for Art’s Birthday is to take the artworks off the walls, out of the display cases, and so on, and simply celebrate art.” Or as Filliou put it in 1973 on the occasion of the first official Birthday Party of Art: “How about you joining the funmaking?”

The 97th issue of Edit Magazine is celebrating its launch at the Heiz Haus in Grünau. To mark the occasion, Jannis Weu will be reading from their piece ‘Kuckuck’.

‘Kuckuck’ by Jannis Weu observes how wage labour transforms the body and fragments time, and how the bureaucratic system in which children are embedded helps to shape them. The text is intended as a counterpoint to the progress reports and performance records that form part of everyday life in residential groups. They give the illusion of documentation, yet in doing so shape the children’s lives and experiences before they are even able to speak.

From a single sound, a syllable takes shape, an incomplete word. The narrative challenges the binary oppositions of behaviour and degeneracy, madness and sanity, the external environment and the inner world. The text weaves together poetic testimonies about the unmasking of the nuclear family—presented as a supposed space of protection and growth, but in reality a possessive, individualistic, hierarchical and brutal form of coexistence—with experiences of exhaustion drawn from the shift work of a queer educational professional. The impossibility of just care within the capitalist system echoes in images of dissolving physicality.

Jannis Weu is an artist, author and educational specialist. Jannis is currently studying in the performative arts class at the HGB and creative writing at the German Literature Institute.

A group of students is exploring the theme of the ‘amygdala complex’: eerie paintings, animated ghosts, childlike innocence and strange figures all come together at K2.

The challenge of exhibiting together with fellow students in a relatively small space presents opportunities for the group and the young artists, who are finding their way through a variety of media and subjects. This exciting process is being supervised by Marthe Lallemand, an artistic collaborator based in Leipzig, and forms part of the Konsumverein’s professional development programme.

Can we recognise the moment when we should not cross a line, should not go along with something, or should not look the other way? Can we resist the game of censorship, survive it, disrupt it or subvert it? And at what point do these strategies begin to perpetuate the very system they originally sought to endure or overcome?

‘The Game We Knew but Didn’t Play’ explores censorship as a power struggle that intervenes in artistic processes, relationships and everyday encounters. The performance explores how censorship determines what can be said and shown, but also how it shapes institutions, communities and the ways in which artists negotiate, adapt, remain silent, take risks or continue their work within restrictive structures. The work is based on Azadeh Ganjeh’s research into German theatre productions that were staged in state-controlled venues in the Islamic Republic of Iran following the 1979 revolution. Shaped by the perspectives of exiled artists who have experienced censorship, these case studies serve as a starting point for an exploration of censorship in various political, cultural and institutional contexts.Developed by Rebel-IST-hah! members Foad Esfahani and Azadeh Ganjeh in collaboration with Lisa Lucassen, Jule Flierl and Philine Rinnert, the performance draws on documentary materials, historical case studies, personal archives, biographies and performative actions.

Together, these materials broaden the exploration of how our lives, our decisions and our actions become entangled in systems of censorship.

Each performance opens up a space for questions. How does censorship intrude upon this space? How does it become an invisible component of aesthetic decisions, institutional agreements or artistic collaborations? And who benefits from the compromises and interdependencies that arise from this? What did we know about the play? And what might happen if we turned this knowledge into action?

Rebel-IST-hah! is a performance and research collective founded in 2006 by Azadeh Ganjeh and Foad Esfahani in Tehran (Iran) and based in Berlin since 2022. Through performance art, artistic research and collaborative working processes, the collective explores social and political issues and examines how people experience power through bodies, spaces, institutions and narratives. Over the years, Rebel-IST-hah! has worked in both conventional and unconventional spaces, collaborating with interdisciplinary artists, performers, researchers and diverse communities. The spectrum of their work ranges from performance activism to immersive theatre, radio plays and lecture-performances, right through to stage productions. In doing so, they combine documentary and archival materials with embodied practices, memory and performative experiments. The result is work that bears witness to activism, opens up spaces for appearance, invites participation in the performance and/or in social reality, and devises alternative forms of political coexistence.

Issues relating to the environment and the climate crisis pose a fundamental challenge to familiar democratic structures – a challenge which, moreover, is increasingly being overlooked as it is overshadowed by other crises and sidelined by institutional overload, political inaction and powerful economic interests. Yet these issues touch upon the very foundations of how we (wish to) live together: how do the environment and democracy relate to one another? What happens when individual freedom clashes with the need to limit resources? And is it possible to conceive of a form of community that responds to the climate crisis not with less, but with more participatory decision-making? Further information...

"Half-titles" — Fliegende Blätter by Marthe Lallemand presents a selection of titles from the HGB Library's magazine collection, including the journal Fliegende Blätter (1844–1944), Imago, FKW, Imprimatur, Reichsdrucke, Das Plakat, and others. The selection follows a feminist thread through the collection. Placed side by side, these titles share a common vocabulary: traces of what a culture displays or conceals when it is not "unveiled."

From each title, the half-title, frontispiece, endpaper, cover, blank page, or colophon is reproduced by hand through various techniques — pencil drawing, relief printing, or painting — in a uniform format of 76 × 56 cm, regardless of meaning, classification, or paper quality. Wrapped in sewn camouflage sleeves made of tea paper, the posters integrate site-specifically into

For the ‘Hidden Treasures’ exhibition series, publications from the HGB Library’s stacks – which are not otherwise freely accessible – are presented. Often, only a subtly placed, colour-coded bookmark or a coloured backing indicates that the item is part of the exhibition.

In the exhibition "Mirrored - Perspectives on Contemporary Etching", students and teachers from the Braunschweig University of Art, the weißensee kunsthochschule Berlin and the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig present around 50 current positions in intaglio printing.

With the emergence of the woodcut in the early 15th century, copperplate engraving in the middle of the century and finally etching shortly before 1500, printmaking became an art genre in its own right. With personalities such as Johannes Gutenberg (ca. 1400-1468), inventor of letterpress printing with movable type, and the exceptional woodcut and etching artist Albrecht Dürer (1471- 1528), Germany can look back on a centuries-old graphic tradition.

Today, it is the art academies in particular that pass on this heritage and at the same time provide new impetus. In their workshops, students receive comprehensive training in classical and experimental intaglio printing techniques - from drypoint, line etching, aquatint, vernis mou, reservage, mezzotint, shabaquatinta, but also techniques such as screen printing on printing plates or processes associated with photography such as cliché verre or photogravure through to interfaces with the digital world. The training programmes at the universities in the three participating federal states are basically the same and yet there are subtle, visible differences.

The workshop directors Maria Ondrej, Braunschweig University of Art, Pedro Boese, weißensee kunsthochschule berlin and Robert Schmiedel, Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts, together with Katharina Walter, Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig, came up with the idea of launching a cross-university exhibition project. The aim is to visualise the diversity and quality of training in the field of etching and at the same time to focus on the next generation of artists. Eight to ten students from each university are invited to take part.

At the same time, the project is a first step towards strengthening similarities and cooperation between the institutions in the long term, working out differences and also providing new impetus. The co-operation is an important contribution to keeping gravure printing alive as an intangible cultural heritage.

The results of the "Mirrored - Perspectives on Contemporary Etching" exhibition will be made accessible to the public at various locations in Germany. The exhibition will kick off at the Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig.

Printed graphics enter a space that is already speaking. Layers and overlays, juxtapositions — on paper and in multiples — are not only a constitutive principle of printmaking, but also traces of an engagement that takes time. Can the architectural space, with its history, itself enter into this practice — from container to content, from frame to representation?

What language do we wish to develop that sets itself apart from spatial structures or transforms them? In collaboration with Marthe Lallemand and Robert Schmiedel, head of the etching workshop, the class is developing works that explore printmaking as a form of spatial thinking. From copperplate engravings to woodcuts, from framed works to site-specific concepts, both site-specific and non-site-specific works are on display.

The gallery in the community centre, with its print workshop, becomes a dialogue partner in its own right.

Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) played a major part in Worpswede being regarded today as one of Europe’s most important artists’ villages. Within just a few years, she created an extensive body of work that was artistically unique, though it was not recognised until decades after her untimely death. Today, the painter is regarded as a pioneer of modern art.

The Paula Modersohn-Becker Art Prize is a living, creatively evolving tribute to this extraordinary artist. The district of Osterholz has been awarding the prize every two years since 2010. The exhibitions accompanying the art prize are held simultaneously at the Große Kunstschau Worpswede and the Barkenhoff.

Three prizes are awarded: the main prize, open to entrants from across Germany; a special prize for artists from Bremen and the district of Osterholz; and the Young Artists’ Prize for emerging artists aged 32 and under. The award ceremony will take place as part of the exhibition opening on 21 November.
