In the group exhibition Many People Live in the Opaque World in the basement of Halle 14 at Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, Parastou Forouhar’s students from Kunsthochschule Mainz enter into a dialogue with former master class students.
The extensive show presents a selection of works from previous semesters as well as artworks created specifically for the exhibition – a multimedia presentation across drawing, painting, photography and sculpture, installation and video art.
The exchange embracing three generations illustrates the complexity of current artistic activity. The exhibition title refers to the right to opacity demanded by Édouard Glissant, who took the view that human understanding must be possible even without complete transparency – an ethical but also political claim, explored by the artists participating in this show.
Parastou Forouhar is one of the most prominent voices in Iranian contemporary art, and a professor [GFK-Fellow] at Kunsthochschule Mainz since 2019.
The artist is known for her political commitment against repression and violence as well as for her role as an intermediary between cultures. Her life and work are an example of a transcultural way of dealing with traditional design vocabularies. To get closer to the different artistic approaches and allow for an exchange, there will be an open, moderated plenary session on 7th of July, to which we invite the class of Prof. Anne Speier (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig) alongside other interested parties.
The talks serve to expand of the exhibition and grant an insight into the artistic process. The artists will reflect on their own creative process, present sources of inspiration and discuss their exhibited work - or in future works - with the attendees.
A joint curatorial concept for the exhibition was developed by the artist Florian Glaubitz. A reader and a limited edition of postcards will be published to accompany the exhibited works. This edition can purchased at the show or via the class website.

On 5th of July, Lucia Krug offers a workshop 'working in and with the exhibition' - a group experiment about transparency and translucence, text fragments, space, bodies, and objects.
