The lecture deals with Zanele Muholi's photographic series "Somnyama Ngonyama. Hail the Dark Lioness" and asks about the queer moment within this (self-)portrait of African futurisms with the everyday as well as popular-culturally significant materials such as rubber, plastic and polyethylene. How are the colonial racist gaze regime of anthropological photography and the ecolonial conditions of digital presence challenged with the visual and material language of queer exaggeration? To this end, I will address - albeit and necessarily incompletely - the history of photography by queers of color and its role in the context of queer media studies.
