The exhibition con.tain focuses on the reuse of "waste", the process of finding and transforming what has been left behind. Objects of various kinds are collected, categorized, transformed and placed in new contexts in terms of content and form in the form of photography, painting, collage, printmaking and installation. Alan Biehlig, Nele Hendrikje Sandner, Katharina Schreiter, Teresa Szepes and Clara Pötsch are showing five artistic positions that deal with issues such as diversity, identity, myths, bodies and organisms alongside the aspect of sustainability. In doing so, they question the nature of things, their content and their function and open up new spaces for thought.

The Busy Hands Fest will take place at Neues Schauspiel Leipzig from May 3 to 5, 2024. The three-day festival provides an insight into the world of concert posters and their local and international designer and artist scene. In addition to a poster fair and a record label market, exhibitions, concerts, lectures and screenings will provide a varied program.

The Type Design Class invites Charlotte Rohde, an artist, (type) designer, and writer based in Berlin, DE. Charlotte's way of handling ideas of hyperfemininity, the economy of trust and pop culture is bracing her horizontally expanding practice of both very applied and also quite fine arts. She is also the Professor for Typography and Type Design at Bauhaus Universität Weimar.

At the beginning of the special exhibition A CHAIR AND YOU, the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts invites you to a talk with the director and visual artist Robert Wilson, who staged the chair objects for the exhibition. The discussion about Wilson's artistic work will be moderated by Prof. Dr Patrick Primavesi, Institute of Theatre Studies at Leipzig University and Professor of Performative Arts at the HGB, Prof. Isabel Lewis. The audience will also have the opportunity to ask the director questions. The event is organised in cooperation with Leipzig University, the Tanzarchiv Leipzig e.V. and the HGB and costs € 10 including admission to the special exhibition. „Ball Theater is an installation designed to awaken our desire for utopia.“

„Enter the Factory“ is the second chapter of Ball Theater, the French contribution to the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale. The modular metallic half-sphere of the Ball Theater will symbolically return from a site of presentation to a site of production, exiting the French Pavillion’s beaux-arts interior in Venice for an open-air site in the center of the Techne Sphere factory in Leipzig.

At a time when money rules the world, Goods & Services could be the umpteenth exhibition by post-digital artists that confronts us with what is still authentic in a hyper-digital, capitalist world. But not least, Anna, Christian and Anaïs get things right and don't beat about the bush. They swim in delirium, plunging into the dizziness of neoliberal structures and social network trends. In doing so, they try to escape unscathed. They offer you an exhibition with panache and sophistication, but one that doesn't pretend. If you don't go home with a work of art, you might go home with another treat.

In Ermatingen, a Swiss village on Lake Constance, once an industrial and migrant-dominated region, many people believe that hard work and politeness are the most important preconditions for social advancement. Is that really the case? Is it still the case? Was it ever like that? Ariane Andereggen, artist, actor and film director, returns to her small hometown and questions the self-perceptions of those who grew up in Ermatingen between the 1970s and 1990s - her classmates, family, former teachers. With the help of archive footage in Super 8 format, VHS snippets, computer-generated images and fragments of her own performances, Andereggen examines social affiliations in her film essay and attempts to counter social judgments with a different, more solidary narrative. (Swiss-German with German subtitles)

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film director.

The event is a cooperation with the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. It is part of the project "Work, Origin, Change, Image" of the "Klasse Klasse" in the photography department and is supervised by Prof. Dr. Ines Schaber and Susanne Keichel.

The Institute for Embodied Creative Practices is an ambulatory research center employing sensorial methodologies. It was initially a fictional institute conceived by artist Isabel Lewis in 2016 and used as a way to frame her own collaborative artistic research practice. Lewis has since been operating The Institute along with various long-term collaborators under various names, in various places and exploring different formats in art institutions, public spaces, open studios, and educational institutions.

From 24 to 26 of May 2024, The Institute will take form in Zurich at Shedhalle for the second time. It is co-hosted by Shedhalle, local practitioners and (inter-)national students. The format is also inviting a wider interested public. At the center of The Institute lies the engagement with one another’s practices and research topics and methods.

The Institute for Embodied Creative Practices invites you into an ambience dedicated to learning and experimenting with various embodied creative practices. Its aim is to hold space for research on forms of intense aesthetic engagement that address a unified human sensorium. It focuses on practices that operate beyond visually-oriented aesthetics and interweave for example taste, touch, smell, sound, and movement as well as ecological research and a sense of ritual in a contemporary context. Together, these practices’ potentials for reflection and the cultivation of analytic techniques that include sensuality are explored.

In three episodes at IDEAL and in urban space, the exhibition project The Stories We Inhabit takes a look at forms of self-organization in public space. The project illuminates motifs of resistant recoding and informal continuations of urban infrastructure, examines porous, provisional dramaturgies and follows trails in urban space. The starting point of the project is the necessary relocation of the self-organized sculpture park Neustadt on a wasteland in the neighbourhood of the IDEAL due to urban construction projects. An exhibition architecture was created in the garden of the IDEAL to store the objects. In this setting, a growing network of artistic interventions is formed, which continuously create new references and overwritings. The three episodes will focus on different themes. The project will be on display at IDEAL until October.

While in many religions paradise is portrayed as a place of perfection and spiritual fulfillment, in the secular sense it is often referred to as the paradisiacal state of a perfect society or a utopian world in which peace, justice and harmony prevail. What they all have in common is the definition of paradise as a state or place of unadulterated happiness. The artists in the exhibition approach the concept through its roots, which lie in the garden, the wall, the fenced-in piece of land. Between metaphor and real place of refuge, they negotiate idyll and nightmare, utopia and dystopia and the garden as an inner place of self-determination.

The publication brings together the voices of artists and authors from Ukraine who have come to Leipzig since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression. In essays and artistic contributions, they talk about the changes in their lives and their arrival in Leipzig, about their encounters with the cultural scene and the people of the city. Their personal experiences of flight are complemented by reflections from Leipzig's cultural institutions, which are seeking to create new forms of solidarity in their venues. The presentation also combines original sounds, visual art and literature. The program includes short films by Nastia Sopilnyk and Valentina Petrova, photographs by Anna Perepechai, a poetic reading by Khrystyna Kozlovska and the presentation of the publication's design concept by Uliana Bychenkova.

The publication was produced in cooperation with the International Cooperation Department of the City of Leipzig, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Schaubühne Lindenfels and the LISTOK-Leipzig Initiative for Solidarity and Open Culture. Supported by the special budget Ukraine of the City of Leipzig 2023. The publication will be available free of charge on the evening.

“In meteorology, the eye is the almost windless center of a hurricane,” I read on Wikipedia on 01.12.2023. Around it, however, where the “high-reaching cumulus clouds” form the “eyewall”, the winds blow more violently than in the rough rest of the hurricane. The weather phenomenon has a proverbial character and can be applied to the state of the world and our almost untouched, thoroughly relaxed existence here, but it also applies to many other things, such as the storms surrounding the question of how art should function correctly. I would like to use the relative calm in the center to seek out positions that could first and foremost be concerned with finding a self-determined way of being, in order to be stable for the upheavals that may come; direct, even innate connotations with seen and felt realities are not excluded. After all, art is a part of this world and occasionally helps us to survive. I take note of the fact that the “eye” is also the first sensory organ for seeing as a meaningful ambiguity. The moment speaks from the background.

The hgb gallery is one of the main exhibition venues on the festival circuit of this year's f/stop festival:

“Escape into the public sphere” describes the conscious movement outwards as a possible strategy for artistic and political work. Often used in connection with the disclosure of incriminating information for which whistleblowers seek the largest possible platform, the term describes how the public sphere is used as a safeguard. Visibility is used here as a control mechanism in which public opinion is used to support critical action. In the GDR, on the other hand, “escaping into the public sphere” meant demonstrating imperturbability and cohesion to the outside world, in contrast to the subliminal and corrosive approaches of the state apparatus.

In the practice of Saxony's building administration, art in architecture as art in public space has both building-cultural and discursive potential - in the artistic reference to urban planning and functional contexts. In recent years, expanded art forms and conceptual orientations have increasingly led to the activation of art in architecture in decidedly site- and context-specific forms and orientations.

In this workshop, we will use an art-in-architecture project realized by the Saxon State Enterprise for Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB) as an introduction to the design development and selection process. Sophie Uchman (visual artist, sculptor) will present the genesis of her art project for the TU Dresden - Institute of Energy Technology and describe the necessities and procedures for practical implementation.

Together with representatives of the awarding authority, Dr.-Ing. Marcus van Reimersdahl (SMWK) and Ingo Fischer (SIB Leipzig branch), we will talk about the basics, conditions and requirements of art in building practice and about desirable changes.

Participants will receive tips for participating in art in architecture competitions and for realization practice. The second half of the workshop will be open to questions from participants.

The lecture series provides an overview of various methodological approaches in current media-historical research. By focusing on methodological issues, the lecture aims to show that the history of media is not simply limited to the historical development and succession of cultural techniques, media technologies, production cultures and the like, but that as media historiography, i.e. as media historiography, it rather encompasses a broad spectrum of different histories of media in the plural, which can sometimes differ greatly in terms of their subject areas, approaches and objectives. Firstly, the development of media technology within and outside of media studies is constantly changing the concept of what is understood as a "medium" or what should be problematized. Secondly, media historiography responds to social debates and also reacts to shifts within the academic discourse itself, under the influence of which the ways and means of telling media history also change. As a result, media historiography is itself an object of historical change.

Dr. Regine Ehleiter, Berlin art historian and curator, working for the Institute for Theory in 2021/22, deals intensively with the topic of "Artists Books" and, during a visit to the library, talks about a project by the long-time director of the MoMA Library and artist book historian Clive Phillpot in the 1970s: conceptual ("difficult") publications (which could neither be clearly defined as books nor as exhibition catalogs) are listed as works of art in their own right and are not relegated to the stacks, but presented in the open stacks: His aim was to create surprises and moments of wonder in the confrontation with the "odd pamphlets": "People using any part of the library could then become mystified or be given surprises by coming across puzzling artists' books that have been dispersed or sercreted through the collection... wonderful moments of not understanding".

Bettina Wija-Stein, head of the bookbinding workshop, will be responsible for the second selection of special titles, which are actually "hidden" in the magazine, but will be shown to the public on the occasion of the anniversary (if the condition of the collection permits).

„Moi Aussi, je me suis demandé si je ne pouvais pas vendre quelque chose et réussir dans la vie. Cela fait un moment déjà que je ne suis bon à rien.  Je suis âgé de quarante ans … […]“

In 1964, the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) wrote in the invitation to his first solo exhibition: " I also asked myself whether I could sell something and be successful in life. For some time I had been useless. I am forty years old ... [...]". He showed objects in the exhibition. These included fifty unsold copies of his last book of poetry, Pense-Bête (1964), which were transformed into a plaster object.
In 2024, Pense-Bête will be 60 years old, Broodthaers 100 years old and the HGB library 150 years old. An opportunity to celebrate together: a deceased artist who made and buried books, with the library of the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst!

The students of the seminar "100XMb or 'What to do to make love?", supervised by Michal B. Ron. are "also" wondering whether they can show "something" new about Broodthaers and "succeed" in the seminar. Does showing Marcel Broodthaers mean de-plastering or over-plastering books? In the field of tension between IMITATION COPY COPY ORIGINAL | IMITATION FALSE COPY ORIGINAL, the students will present their first results on July 12, 2024.

Every year since 1995, "Library Day" has been held throughout Germany on October 24. It was initiated by the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker.

Every year, the day draws attention to the more than 9,000 libraries in Germany and arouses curiosity about their extensive range of services. Since the introduction of the Day of Libraries, many libraries have held a variety of events to draw attention to the various services provided by libraries as indispensable cultural and educational institutions.

On Libraries Day, the German Library Association, together with the Telekom Foundation, awards the "Library of the Year" prize and, since 2020, the "Library of the Year in Small Municipalities and Regions".
