Every year since 1995, "Library Day" has been held throughout Germany on October 24. It was initiated by the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker.

Every year, the day draws attention to the more than 9,000 libraries in Germany and arouses curiosity about their extensive range of services. Since the introduction of the Day of Libraries, many libraries have held a variety of events to draw attention to the various services provided by libraries as indispensable cultural and educational institutions.

On Libraries Day, the German Library Association, together with the Telekom Foundation, awards the "Library of the Year" prize and, since 2020, the "Library of the Year in Small Municipalities and Regions".
