The HGB Leipzig mourns the death of artist and former master student Neven Allanic, who on 26.09.2024 died at the age of 44.
Neven Allanic was born in Nice 1980. He studied at the Villa Arson art academy in Nice and graduated there before beginning a guest study programme in Christopher Muller's photography class at the HGB in 2008. Since moving to Leipzig, he has been involved as the founder and director of the Leipzig-based association and platform project Fugitif, a Franco-German network of artists and cultural professionals in the field of contemporary art. From 2012 to 2015, he studied as a Meisterschüler with Joachim Blank. The focus of his artistic work was diverse: he integrated performative approaches into his videos, worked with photography and combined these elements to create installation, object and space-based works.
"I have very fond memories of the collaboration and the many interesting conversations with Neven Allanic when I was able to accompany him during his Meisterschüler programme in the Installation and Space class at the HGB, which I still lead today: It was a relationship at eye level - he was very humorous, poetic and intellectually extremely reflective - for me a very special person and artist. Even though we only met occasionally in recent years, I always appreciated his alert manner and admired how he managed to combine his private life with his house and family with his universal artistic and curatorial practice to create something whole. It makes me all the sadder to read that he is no longer with us..."
Joachim Blank, Professor of Media Art at the HGB
