Federal Order of Merit for Christine Rink

Federal Order of Merit for Christine Rink

Christine Rink, former director and curator of the HGB gallery for many years, is the recipient of a Federal Order of Merit. This was awarded to her on 25 January 2024 by Michael Kretschmer, the Prime Minister of Saxony.

Agnes Wegner, Rector of the HGB, congratulates Christine Rink on this honour: "Your tireless commitment to the HGB and your passionate dedication to art are admirable and deserve the highest recognition. Your work has not only significantly influenced generations of students and teachers at the HGB, but has also inspired and impressed numerous artists and cultural professionals outside the academy. You are a role model for us all. Congratulations on this well-deserved honour!"

From 1979 to 2010, Christine Rink managed the gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and realised exhibitions of important representatives of international 20th century art – for many visitors, this was the first opportunity to encounter originals of classical modernism in fine art and photography. The most notable presentations include works by Pablo Picasso (1980), Herbert Sandberg (1981), August Sanders (1981), El Lissitzky (1983), the exhibitions "American Pop Art" (1984), Man Ray (1986), Henri Cartier Bresson (1987) and Joseph Beuys (1988). An insight into this period can be found in the digital gallery archive and the publication by Christine Rink and Beatrice von Bismarck (ed.): "nur hier? Die Galerie der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig 1980-2005“, Kerber Verlag, Bielefeld 2005.

The art historian was married to the artist and former rector of the HGB Arno Rink, whose artistic estate Christine Rink has been managing since his death in 2017. Recently she has published the volume „Arno Rink: Ich bin kein moderner Künstler. Tagebücher, Skizzenbücher, Notizen, Briefe 1960-2017“.
