There is probably no other cultural genre in which stereotypical, exoticizing and racist depictions and narratives are as persistent as in opera. For example, the Ethiopian princess Aida in Giuseppe Verdi's opera of the same name is regularly portrayed with blackfacing to this day. Giuseppe Verdi was commissioned to compose the work when the Suez Canal was opened, so the context of the colonial conditions of the time is also thought-provoking. The music theater performance Ayda Tani عايدة تاني creates new narratives around the characters from Verdi's opera, countering the Eurocentric and stereotypical image of Egypt with a self-determined and multi-layered one. In the process, fragments from Verdi's Aida, classical and popular Egyptian music, Arabic poetry, and video installations are woven into a complete work of art. The interdisciplinary ensemble is composed of classically trained singers and performance artists.
