In the public event series TALK ABOUT EXPANDED SUSTAINABILITY aspects of an advanced sustainability in the awareness of a local as well as global interconnectedness will be examined more closely and discussed in the context of artistic action and research, based on the different research foci of the lecturing guests.
Artistic action and research as an extended art practice deals with the fluid boundaries between art, science, technology, politics and society, artistic and curatorial action, art and sustainability, art and (Über)Leben | (about)life / survival). Materials, media, formats, conceptualizations and artistic strategies are negotiated as well as systemic questions about the social relevance of artistic action and: What can art achieve? How does art draw attention? Where does it take place?
The thematic focus of the class Artistic Action and Research in WS22/23 is on the project EXPANDED SUSTAINABILITY with an advanced understanding of "sustainability". EXPANDED SUSTAINABILITY is not limited to global environmental and developmental issues with regard to sustainability of any kind, but also focuses on the constituent structures and networks of relationships with their mutual dependencies, liabilities and responsibilities, in addition to economics, science, technology and art. Considerations such as: What remains? What survives? What will be transformed? What is transmitted or will be communicated? What reverberates? ... lead to the question: What effects do our (artistic) actions have beyond the present on the future? Since we never know what dimensions even the smallest impulses (butterfly effect) might assume, possible answers always remain speculative.
What is the relevance of sustainability in the field of artistic action and ephemeral "works of art"? It is often the fleeting perceptions and stimuli such as smells, or the virtual blueprints of life (genetics, epigenetics, codes, rituals, habits, memories, etc.) that manifest themselves over generations and generate ever new triggers. Fluid and flexible structures, because of their resilience, are able to outlast everything else, even if they sometimes spiral out of control. The term "sustainability", which is almost automatically given the predicate "valuable", has, like everything else, undesirable (side) effects and downsides. Earwigs, smells, media images, rumors, traumatic experiences, etc. leave indelible traces just like an atomic bomb or the fear of it - lasting experiences that solidify and influence everything in the future. Therefore, the focus is also on larger contexts, long-term influencing factors and possible future effects from negative pathogenic to positive salutogenic.
