Art scene/East - Biographies in transition

Digital interview project with artists and cultural workers in the GDR

The interview project Kunstszene/Ost - Biografien im Umbruch (Art Scene/East - Biographies in Transition) aims to make the complexity of the GDR reality comprehensible by focussing on artists and cultural workers on the basis of personal stories. In view of the many contradictions and the simultaneity of the most diverse life situations. In view of the reality of the GDR, which was characterised by many contradictions and the simultaneity of different life situations, the personal stories enable a differentiated view that can contribute to a retrospective overall understanding of the time for other contemporary witnesses as well as for future generations. One aim of the two initiators Sarah Alberti and Birgit Grimm is to preserve the very personal stories for future generations and make them available to those interested in culture, journalists and academics.
The interviewees, including Gerd Harry Lybke, Christine Rink and Annette Schröter, explain their individual lives, experiences and perspectives on life in the GDR and in reunified Germany.

The interviews in text form, accompanied by photographic portraits, are now published on the website www.kunstszeneost.de.
