Agnes Wegner officially begins her five-year term as the new rector of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. She replaces Thomas Locher, whose term of office ended on Dec. 31, 2022. She is the second woman to head Leipzig's more than 250-year-old art academy.
"A new beginning is always special. I am delighted that my work at the HGB Leipzig is starting now," said Agnes Wegner on taking up her post.
Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow officially appointed Agnes Wegner as the new rector of HGB Leipzig. State Secretary Andreas Handschuh of the State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism presented the new rector with the appointment and nomination certificate last Thursday.
"I wish Rector Wegner good luck in the management of her official duties and look forward to working with her. I am convinced that the renowned art academy will face excellent further development with the experienced cultural manager at the helm," commented Science Minister Gemkow. "At the same time, I would like to thank the previous rector Thomas Locher for his merits and very good work, as well as the prorectors Prof. Dr. Marc Rölli and Prof. Dr. Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer, who has filled the office of rector on a transitional basis since the beginning of the year for this purpose."
Agnes Wegner was unanimously elected as the new rector by the Extended Senate on October 13, 2022. The 56-year-old cultural manager moves to HGB Leipzig from the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, where she has coordinated the program in the area of fine arts and film since 2017.
