In view of the current strengthening of right-wing extremist movements in Germany and around the world, the question of the history of National Socialism is also being raised with new urgency at art academies. What possibilities are there for artistic and academic research to deal with fragmented traditions, gaps in archives and blind spots in the historiography of one's own institution? What forms can be found to turn fragments into images that not only take into account the complexities of historical constellations, but also the inconclusiveness of memory work and sensitise us to continuities right up to the present day? The third issue of the HGB Magazine takes up questions that were discussed in seminars at the HGB Leipzig and the Kunsthochschule Kassel on right-wing continuities at art academies. In addition to essays that place current nationalist tendencies in historical contexts and examine ideological patterns, the first results of research into the history of the HGB between 1933 and 1945 are presented and embedded in a chronology that places them in relation to National Socialist politics and primarily cultural activities in Leipzig.
Digressions on related initiatives in Dresden, Halle and Vienna, on the status of research at the Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig and on earlier projects at the HGB complete the presentation. Three artistic positions round off the magazine as the results of the seminars.
