Le Corbusier planned and built five Unité d‘habitation buildings from 1945 to 1967 in Marseilles, Rezé, Berlin, Briey and Firminy. Also because of the post-war housing shortage, he developed a new type of building, a multifunctional block of flats that combined a large number of apartments with rooftops and other urban structures such as kindergarten, cinema, pharmacy, grocery store on a small area. The prototype of the Unités was completed in Marseille in 1952 and triggered an international discussion through its revolutionary conception as a vertical city with completely new solutions to urban, social, aesthetic and constructive issues.
The five Unité d‘habitation buildings are in very different conditions today. Arthur Zalewski captured it photographically.
