A hybrid panel discussion hosted by Cultures of the Curatorial (HGB Leipzig) in cooperation with the MA Program Curating and Art History (American University of Beirut) and Staatliche Ethnographische Sammlungen Sachsen, Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden

Angry art? Furious exhibitions? The structures, mindsets and consequences of current Orientalism(s) evoke different kinds of emotions especially in people who are directly and continuously exposed to Orientalism(s). One of them is Wut/غضب/fury. Whereas the “furious Oriental male” still is a central and negative trope of Orientalism(s), Wut/غضب/fury might also be a fruitful and thriving force to defy exactly these Orientalism(s) by deconstructing them, emancipating ourselves from them and crafting new narratives.

Together with our guests Cihan Çakmak, Mina Jawad and Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç, our moderator Beatrice von Bismarck will discuss these and other thoughts and questions. We will explore ways of dealing with still existent orientalizing structures surrounding us in the arts, in museum collections as well as in broader political, social and cultural spheres. Cihan Çakmak
Cihan Çakmak is a photographer and multimedia artist who lives in Leipzig. She studied photography at the University of Applied Arts and Science Dortmund, the IADE in Lisbon as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. For her studies, she received a scholarship from Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. In 2020, she received the Paula Modersohn-Becker newcomer artprice. In her work, she traces questions of identity, emancipation and self-determination.

Mina Jawad
Mina Jawad, an independent writer, employs a deconstructivist approach to explore issues related to space and gender. She engages with, among other topics, postcolonial analysis in art and culture. Her (un-)published works challenge and transcend the conventional boundaries of academic, journalistic, and artistic constraints.

Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç
Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç is a political scientist and author based in Berlin. He teaches and researches, among other things, on (anti-Muslim) Racism, Antisemitism, Orientalism as well as memory and critical art and cultural production. His widely acclaimed book ’Muslimaniac. The career of an enemy image’ recently got published in a revised new edition by Verbrecher Verlag.

Beatrice von Bismarck
Beatrice von Bismarck teaches art history, visual culture and cultures of the curatorial at the Academy of Fine Arts (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst) Leipzig. She worked as a curator of the department of 20th-century art at Städel Museum, Frankfurt, was co-founder and co-director of the Kunstraum der Universität Lüneburg, initiator of the M.A. Program Cultures of the Curatorial and co-directed the itinerant TRANScuratorial Academy (Berlin, Mumbai, Phnom Penh 2017-2018). Her monograph "The Curatorial Condition" came out in 2022 (Sternberg Press).

Being angry, being furious is curated by Nushin Atmaca as part of the collaboration of  the MA program Cultures of the Curatorial (Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig) with  the MA Art History and Curating program at the American University of Beirut funded by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) with funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
