www.halle14.org/“Now We Stand in a Crowded Gap” follows up on Monica Ross’s speech “History or Not,” which recounts the activism and art of feminists in 1970s Britain. Drawing on her collaborations and alliances, her March 2000 speech critiques the exclusion of feminist works in survey exhibitions of conceptual art. She marks the lack of contemplation and inscription of feminist art in art history and its attribution to the domestic and craft spheres and echoes the activities and achievements of the feminist liberation movement.
The artist group Spiral Threads follows the narratives and demands of Ross and her contemporaries, spinning other narrative threads and accomplices into their web. In the wall piece “Now We Stand in a Crowded Gap,” the activities of Ross and her accomplices as well as the commentaries and experiences from the present, step out of the marginal. Marks and references to buried feminist history emerge at the center highlighting experiences that then, as now, are repressed into the particular and private.
