Warm invitation to reading, snacks, drinks and music in the garden!
The publication WHEN THE ATMOSPHERE IS LESS THAN PERFECT brings together the works of 29 artists* who dissolve their authorship and merge into a web of relationships in this essayistic volume of images and texts. The leading conceptual figure is the canary, an animal used as a sensor to detect mine gas because of its sensitive respiratory organ: Canary In A Coalmine is not only an accomplice but also a product of the Anthropocene. The relationship of humans to nature, to themselves and to other organisms and spaces is the focus of this volume, which ties into current discourses in the natural and social sciences. Based on the thesis that not only we produce images, but increasingly images also produce us, Canary takes a critical look at the (post)photographic image in terms of both content and form: for just as oils, plastics, or metals permeate our bodies, so too do images infect and adhere to us and shape material worlds.
For their publication, the artists received the HGB Leipzig 2021/22 Study Award.
The artist's book is self-published in a small edition and was elaborately produced in riso and silkscreen printing.
