As part of the "Kunst am Bau" competition among HGB students, which was initiated by Studentenwerk Leipzig together with the university, Agnes Wegner (HGB Rector) and Dr Andrea Diekhof (Managing Director of Studentenwerk Leipzig) inaugurated the new artwork "Again and again" by Ida Lovis Hüsing in the cafeteria of Mensa am Park. Hüsing studies painting and graphics at the HGB in the class of Prof Ivana de Vivanco.
The installation "Again and again" shows a blue-grey wall painting onto which a collage of coloured clay plates has been applied. The artist explains: "I wanted to create a work that is not only decorative, but also invites discovery. Each plate tells its own story and combines with the painting to create a new, lively composition. Especially in a cafeteria, where people come together, the artwork should stimulate conversations and constantly open up new perspectives."
The competition, organised in cooperation between the HGB and Studentenwerk Leipzig, was launched in June 2024 with the aim of enhancing the empty wall in the cafeteria of Mensa am Park with a student art project. Ten HGB students initially submitted designs, five of which made it to the final selection. An expert jury consisting of representatives of the HGB, the student union and independent art experts unanimously decided in favour of Ida Lovis Hüsing's design, which impressed with its cross-media approach and sensitive examination of the space.
Ida Lovis Hüsing received prize money of 4,000 euros for the work, which enhances the social meeting place Mensa both aesthetically and in terms of content.
