The School of Labour was a model project for workers' education under the direction of Gertrud Hermes. With the construction of the new School of Labour in Leipzig-Schleußig in 1928, a modern place was created for young workers to live and learn together.
The attack by the SA in the spring of 1933 and the confiscation of the building by the National Socialists put an end to the educational project.
The film "Gertrud oder die Differenz" is an artistic appropriation of forgotten history with a contemporary perspective. After extensive archive research, film production and intervention in the urban space, Ute Richter concludes her artistic research into the Leipzig model project for workers' education with the exhibition and book "Prototyp 1928-33". The historical material points to a missing emancipatory project of the present and shows what education means for the preservation of democratic structures.
