Under the motto "Know. Share. Discover.", libraries across Germany are offering a varied programme on the night of 4 April. The library of the HGB Leipzig presents the reconstruction of the iconic net art project without addresses, which the artists Joachim Blank, Professor of Media Art at the HGB, and Karl Heinz Jeron (Blank & Jeron) developed for documenta X 1997.
Blank & Jeron used the internet as an artistic medium at a time when net art was still in its infancy. Visitors could interactively create an automatically generated HTML website, which was entered in real time on a city map, whereby this map represented the only orientation system in virtual space, without addresses or an index. In an innovative way, the screen work critically ironised the idealistic notions of the early Internet as a free and democratic means of communication by examining the individual self-presentation of users and their algorithmically generated digital representations. It thematised the visibility and invisibility of individuals in an increasingly networked but also fragmented world.
At the end of the exhibition, the work was removed from the internet and has not been available since. Together with the artists, the Centre for Net Art in Berlin 2024 has undertaken an extensive reconstruction project and implemented a simulation of without addresses that makes it possible to view the work in a contemporary browser. By focusing on the mediation of the work, visitors can experience the original "feel" of the work and better understand the functionality and conceptual framework of the original documenta version. In addition, extensive documentation of the work and its development was collected and compiled in a wiki. The resulting Netart Repository will enable a detailed examination of the work as well as further conservation efforts in the future.
At 17:30, Tereza Havlíková (Centre for Net Art Berlin) will give an introduction to the reconstruction methods and processes of without addresses. Joachim Blank will present the original work.
