In three episodes at IDEAL and in urban space, the exhibition project The Stories We Inhabit takes a look at forms of self-organization in public space. The project illuminates motifs of resistant recoding and informal continuations of urban infrastructure, examines porous, provisional dramaturgies and follows trails in urban space. The starting point of the project is the necessary relocation of the self-organized sculpture park Neustadt on a wasteland in the neighbourhood of the IDEAL due to urban construction projects. An exhibition architecture was created in the garden of the IDEAL to store the objects. In this setting, a growing network of artistic interventions is formed, which continuously create new references and overwritings. The three episodes will focus on different themes. The project will be on display at IDEAL until October.
The wasteland, like that of the sculpture park, stands for an urban space in which the unplanned, low-threshold and informal of everyday life, the unknown, the social deviation creates space. The supposedly unused, wild area is a space of possibility and a projection surface for speculation, trails criss-cross the site and a polyphonic collective space is created through the appropriation and personal initiative of the users. Episode B tells of the emergence of such places and the temporality and stories that are inscribed in the terrain in the course of their creation.
The project is curated by Gregor Peschko, Clara Hofmann, Martin Haufe and Adrian Lück.
The project will be on display at IDEAL until October. Further information at idealartspace.de or on Instagram: @ideal_artspace
Program on 23 June:
4 pm Performance Julia Kiehlmann: "LET'S GET POOLITICAL!" We walk from Kunstraum IDEAL to the wasteland on Schultze-Delitzsch-Straße to fill a small pool with water. Afterwards, you can listen to a short reading of borrowed texts while taking a footbath, or fill a garbage bag to songs about cleaning and being dirty. With this performance, we are activating Julia Kiehlmann's site-specific work "Adding a Missing Place", which has been ongoing since 2021. At the time, she laid new tiles in an abandoned fountain on a wasteland. Since then, she has been regularly inviting people to visit the site, care for it and make it their own.
6-8 p.m. Performance / Food with Liu Tianxu: "Stranger Food on Din A0" Is there really an action that can be the solution to "tummy ache"? Or is there really a stranger and a home? Is there a leaving or a returning? Who, what and where? And many more questions. They will flow into a DIN-standardized space: a recipe? A flavor? A kitchen? The project will be accompanied by talks and a series of films in the garden.
