In recent years, the concept of freedom has increasingly lost its innocence. When we talk about 'freedom', we no longer necessarily think of having left constraints behind us and broken shackles. Rather, we think of individuals who assert their freedom at the expense of others. There are ideologies of freedom and emancipation with far-reaching consequences. They have philosophical roots and justifications; at the same time, there are counter-models that are also philosophically articulated and can be described as models of liberation. They are irreconcilably opposed to each other in current political discussions: in changing guises as democracy and capitalism, critical enlightenment and anti-racist decolonial theory, liberalism and ecology, and so on. A better understanding of this paradox of freedom/liberation could mean a productive response to the social polarization dynamics of the crisis-ridden present.
