From image to net art to sculpture and back again

Joachim Blank, professor of media art at the HGB, presents his hybrid artistic practice using selected examples:

I am currently working with an archive of the German-language reportage magazine German-language reportage magazine GEO ("Das neue Bild der Welt", "Die Welt mit anderen Augen sehen") from 1976 to the end of the 1990s. After acquiring a second-hand magazine archive in 2018, I photographed the contents of these magazines with my smartphone while leafing through them. The resulting image archive currently comprises more than 3000 photos. My smartphone pictures mostly show image details, little to no text and mix advertising with editorial photo series. They form an independent digital image archiveIn "dialog" with an AI and digital image filters, these images of images become installative images that return to the physical space as fine art prints with epoxy layers. I also reconstructed image fragments and motifs into AR figures, which, together with installative interventions in the physical space, complete an exhibition.
