The “f/stop TALK” series begins on 24 November with Gabriele Stötzer and a hybrid event at D21. This event marks the start of the 10th edition of f/stop - Festival für Fotografie Leipzig, curated by Magdalena Stöger and Leon Hösl.
The f/stop TALK with Gabriele Stötzer gives an insight into her work in the field of performance art during the GDR era together with the Künstlerinnengruppe Erfurt between 1984 and 1994 and at the University of Erfurt from 2010 to 2020.
Using the term "social performance", she reconstructs the development of the analogue individual performance that goes beyond the boundaries of personal protection (asocial performance) to the multiple structures within a group (social performance). The discussion, moderated by Constanze Müller, will be accompanied by texts, photos and video excerpts.
Gabriele Stötzer was born in Emleben, East Germany, in 1953. In the mid-1970s, she studied at a teacher training college in Erfurt, but was exmatriculated for political reasons. Her further opposition activity earned her a one-year prison sentence. After being released, she became involved in art, running a gallery and creating her own works, which included not only photography, film, painting and performance, but also textiles, ceramics, created objects, art books and costumes. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Stötzer co-initiated the first occupation of the Stasi (Ministry for State Security of the GDR) headquarters in Erfurt in order to prevent its files from being destroyed. After the political transformation, she continued her artistic work, participated in exhibitions and published eight books. The artist lives and works in Erfurt, teaching seminars at the university of Erfurt about performance and delivering lectures on feminist art and being a contemporary witness. In 2013, she was awarded the Federal Republic of Germany’s Order of Merit for her social and political activities.
