We are pleased to meet Dr. Dorothea Schöne, the director of an important Berlin exhibition house.

The historic building, located directly on the Grunewald in the immediate vicinity of the Brücke Museum, is the former state studio of the sculptor Arno Breker. During the "Third Reich," Breker (1900-1991) was, along with Josef Thorak, the best-known sculptor whose work represented National Socialist ideology. After the end of the war, Bernhard Heiliger (1915-1995), an important sculptor of West German post-war modernism, moved into the east wing of the building in 1949. Since 1996, the Bernhard Heiliger Foundation has had its headquarters in the building. Emilio Vedova was the first international artist to take over the central building of the studio house in 1964/65. In 1971/72, the building was divided into eight smaller studios, which were subsequently administered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Berlin Cultural Senate. Renowned artists such as Armando, Ouhi Cha, Jimmie Durham and Dorothy Iannone had their workplaces here. The co-founder of the Fluxus movement Wolf Vostell (1932-1998) worked in the studio in the west wing from 1984, which the DAAD made available to the Canadian artist Jimmie Durham and his wife Maria Thereza Alves, among others, from 1998.
After renovation and reconstruction in 2014-2015, Kunsthaus Dahlem opened in the summer of 2015 as an exhibition house for the art of German post-war modernism in East and West Germany. A major focus of the exhibition house is the presentation of plastic art, complemented by painting, graphic works as well as photography. The focus is particularly on the years 1945 to 1961.
How does the house deal with its history, what are the challenges of running a house that has a clearly defined focus, (how) does an examination of contemporary art nevertheless take place? Forgotten Jewish positions are given space - is this honored by the audience? How are the dislocations between modernism/art of the "Third Reich"/postwar modernism addressed in the exhibitions and do the exhibitions reflect the struggles for direction in postwar art (also between East and West?). Where does this leave women artists of postwar modernism? How important are museums for the posthumous rediscovery of artists* and art movements and what is the prerequisite for this rediscovery?

About Dr. Dorothea Schöne
Dorothea Schöne studied art history, political science, sociology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. From 2005-2006 she was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Riverside and from 2006 to 2009 worked at the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) as a curatorial assistant for the exhibition "Art of Two Germanys/ Cold War Cultures," which was also on view in Nuremberg and Berlin in 2010. From 2010 to 2014, she worked as a freelance curator and art critic while also working on her dissertation. In 2015, she received her doctorate in art history on Berlin's post-war modernism. She has received several awards for her research. In 2012 she was a fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., and in2018 a guest curator at the HOW Art Museum in Shanghai. In2021 she was awarded the Hans and Lea Grundig Prize, which honors research and exhibition on persecuted and ostracized artists.
Since February 2014, she has been the artistic director of Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin.
