For the group exhibition, eight students at the end of their diploma studies would like to hang works by a cross-section of established artists of our parents' and teachers' generation between their works. This division into generations has been a popular exhibition theme lately. In addition to the direct teacher-student relationship, we are even more interested in the extent to which each generation of artists
generation of artists also reacts to its time and environment and is shaped by them.
Regardless of formal and personal questions, the new twenties offer completely different conditions than, say, the nineties: in terms of social discourse as well as economic constraints and opportunities, in terms of self-location in a local tradition and in terms of worldwide networking. Compared to other academies, the HGB has been particularly successful in establishing itself as a recognizable brand. Although the discussion as to which features are actually characteristic of Leipzig painting will probably never come to an end, a number of stylistic relationships between the works of the most diverse artists can be identified - even if counterexamples can be found to every apparent rule, they are by no means taken out of the air in the narrower circle. Practically, we want to explore such repetitive developments in the painterly process in the exhibition, especially where they seem to appear independently of each other in otherwise completely different positions.
