www.schaubuehne.comPartner:The conference takes place within the framework of "meaoiswiamia - Guest Country Austria Leipzig Book Fair" as a cooperation between the IFK International Research Center for Cultural Studies, the Maria Lassnig Foundation, the Austrian Film Museum and the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts.
Maria Lassnig is known as an important and extraordinary painter. Less known so far are her cinematic experiments, which she developed - in New York and later also in Vienna. With Women/Artists/Filmmakers, she co-founded an association of film-making, feminist artists in the USA in 1974. In her master class for "Design Theory - Experimental Design" at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, she founded what was then the only teaching studio for animated films, which still exists today.
The conference will deal with Maria Lassnig's entire cinematic oeuvre, i.e. both the films authorized by the artist herself and those films and film fragments that were posthumously edited by students. Questions about the oeuvre character of the works, about the complex relationship between painting and film, but also questions about collaborations and participations will be discussed and raised. Close readings or close viewings of the films will be embedded in art and film history, media theory and socio-political issues. Experts, companions and restorers will have their say. In addition to lectures and discussions, the films themselves will be shown in two blocks.
